Operation Overlord '97

The mission of Operation Overlord '97 is to help perpetuate U. S. Army Ranger customs and traditions. Pointe-du-Hoc, Omaha Beach and Dieppe are supremly symbolic centerpieces of our Ranger universe.

In June 1997, the Rangers of all eras and units who will muster in Normandy have fought on battlefields in Burma, Italy, Korea, Vietnam, Grenada, Somolia, Panama and on many, many others. We could have palnned our pigrimage on any of them. But the rugged promotory of Pointe-du-Hoc, a US battlefield monument that still retains the pock-marked evidence of intensive preinvasion bombardments, and 'Bloody' Omaha Beach, where the battle cry 'Rangers Lead The Way' has been rooted since General Cota issued his charge to the 5th Rangers, and Dieppe, where in August 1942, U. S. Army Rangers attached to forces of the United Kingdom participated in a courageous but costly first raid on occupied France, offer particualary appropriate venues for this once-in-a-lifetime mustering of Rangers.
