What a Site! During the last six yrs I have been compiling information in an effort to complete a History of the Ammunition Tech occupation. I have produced a small manuscript which touches on the generalities of the occupations beginning. If anyone has any information relating to Ammunition Technicians and Ammunition Examiners I would greatly appreciate anything on this subject.

Very impressed with the content of your page, a lot of good history. The only thing I would like to see added is some information about the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals/Communications and Electronics Branch. Every war, battle, unit and UN tour had it's signallers who fought and died alongside their combat arms brothers, lets give them some recognition

Excellent question, Pte Sullivan. The information on the QOR was provided by a member of the regiment. I encourage members from any and all units to send additional info, as all I have here is the basics. The only clause is that info has to already be in electronic format (IE: it's best to e-mail it to me).
I look forward to hearing from you.

Does anybody have any information about the Joint Special Taskforce? I have been trying to join the U.S. Navy for a shot at their S.E.A.L. teams thinking that we did not have any programs within our forces that was along the same lines. Being a Canadian citizen has given me no end of trouble with the U.S. I.N.S.. After talking to a immigration lawyer, I have concluded that this would be impossible to do. However if we have any programs that are similar I would be interested in enlisting and working towards the J.S.T. .

Canadian Forces Recruiting, Education and Training System (CFRETS) maintains a homepage on that net with recruiting information. Currently the only info available is on the Regular Officer Training Plan (ROTP), for the gentleman interested in pursuing a degree through the CF, but they are working on all other plans available in the CF, including Reserve programs. The location is www.rotp.iplink.net. Your local Recruiting Centre or Detachment can also provide all the info you require on any and all CF programs. You can get their telephone number in your phone book and there is also a toll-free number that will connect you with the nearest Recruiting Centre/Det and it is 1-800-856-8488. For the cadet seeking info on the Ceremonial Guard; you can get info on this by contacting the Recruiting Centre in Halifax. The auditions are conducted by personnel from the Ceremonial Guard but the actual processing for successful applicants is done by the Recruiting units. If you have any problems getting info, please, e-mail me and I will send you whatever we have.

Trying to find information on the 133rd Bat. Machine gunner. My Father was a machine gunner in WW1 in the Canadian Army. He died 2 days before I was 9 years old. He was gassed twice at Vimy Ridge. I still have his pay book and map and swagger stick (machine gun to big to carry in parades HI HI) I came back to the states with my Mother and lost track of Family in Canada. So at 69 years old I now wonder where they all are. My Father would never talk about the War and when I was 8 years he took me to see the movie (All quiet on the western front) I remember after about 5 minutes he got up and went outside till after the movie was over ! I have seen the movie after I grew up and had been in the Army & Navy and now understand why he did it. I know our Family came to Canada from Scotland and I am trying to find out who and when. Found sone papers my Mother had of my Dads and trtying to figure them out. He died in the Vets Hospital in London Ont. Can. Nov. 4th 1936. Doubt very much if there is anyone left who knows anything about it . I did find the Battle of Vimy Ridge on the net but can't find my way back to it (Am new to computers HI HI) Good Luck Al

Excellent page. I especially like your links to other armed forces around the world. I'm webmaster (a questionable term when associated with me) for the US Army Warrant Officer Career Center home page. I've been trying to find potential links to warrant officers in other armed forces, without much luck. My lack of success may be due to the unique way in which we train and utilize our warrant officers in comparison with other armies. I would greatly appreciate knowing of any potential links you've seen.

I have two reasons for re-visiting your "War Diary". The first one, is to inform anyone wishing to contact me, that I now have a new "Web Server". The second reason is mainly directed to our friends south of the border, who served with the US forces in Newfoundland; particulair the ones that served at "Harmon Airforce Base". I am trying to contact a chap, his name was/is, Cole Theodore Stancil. Friends use to call hin "Ted". He was in the Military Police, at the time he was in Harmon. That would be around 1962. He was born in North Carolina around 1942. Anyone that can help me to contact either Ted or any member of his familey, it would be much appreciate. Thank you for the space on your excellant Page...

Mr. Maren, let me personally apologize for jumping the gun and "pointing a finger." I wrongly concluded that the owner of the page had posted the comments below. In fact, it is not the contents of the page that offended me, as it contains factual and justfied information. It was the manner of the comments left here that prompted me to respond.
I respect an individual's right to express an opinion - whatever it is - and I find it interesting to see the spectrum of ideas that Canadians hold about their military.
My intent was not to launch a personal attack against you, but to counter the opinions posted. I agree wholeheartedly that the person who left the comments in question is cowardly for using anonymity, and clearly lacks the fortitude (or justification) to stand behind their comments.
Again, I apologize for any inconvenience to you.
Webmaster, Canadian Army Home Page: Wolfville, NS Canada
Gentlemen, I've received messages about comments that I was supposed to have left in this diary. I would like to assure everyone that I have NEVER seen this page until today when I received the URL from Capt. Todd Harris. Someone put a link in to on article on my homepage. The comments that accompanied that line in no way reflect my attitudes about the Canadian military, or any military. Though I have criticized the decision makers involved in the Somalia intervention, I have never published a single criticism of any one of the soldiers who sacrificed in that mission. Much of what I have previously published in openly available on my home page. I hope this clears up any misunderstandings, and I would be happy to continue this dialogue. Unfortunately the internet allows people, cowards, to hide behind aliases and to impersonate others. I stand by what I write and I used my name. I DID NOT write the comments on you page. Thank you, Michael Maren
New York, NY USA
This is a copy of comments I sent to Mr. Maren You Sir, have a very one sided attitude about the Canadian Military. I happened to live by, and know one of the individuals involved in the Somalia incident. I can tell you from experience that he was a strange individual long before he joined the Canadian Military. I think if the truth be known, you can find examples of poor judgement, and illegal acts in all walks of society, not just the Military. The Military represents a cross section of society. So if you make negative comments about the Military, I hope you include the rest of Society in those comments. Not much is said about the good things we do. It seems that all everybody wants to hear is the negative things. Well I'm tired of hearing about the negative things the Military does. I feel that you should concentrate your efforts on things a little more positive. Capt Todd Harris, Canadian Reserves

Excellent site, John, well done! I served 23 years in the Reg Force, 14 as a Fd Engr and the last 9 as an officer of the 8 CH. I have been in the Militia since Feb 90 and am now the DCO of 56 Fd Engr Sqn and a Military Career Counsellor at CFRC St. John's. This month I celebrate 30 years as a soldier and despite the few bad apples who have given us a black eye I am the proudest man on earth. I am delighted there are people like you and the many contributors to your page to show the world that we are a proud, proven and professional force. My father was a soldier in the British Artillery during WWII, my son is currently serving in the LdSH(RC) and my 5 yr old grandson is already talking about being a soldier like "Poppy" (Newfie for Grampa). There must be something good about the life and the people. Chimo!
Capt: St. John's, NF Canada
In response to the comments below, left by Michael Maren:
As a military community, we are all quite aware of the recent events in Somalia. We appreciate you bringing your information to this page, however we don't appreciate your generalized, unbased, scathing remarks.
The Canadian Military is not, contrary to some preception, a covert group of thugs who want nothing more than to kill, destroy, and bury the results.
We are Canadian Citizens, and for the most part, very proud ones. Each incident like this affects us as much as - or more than - the rest of Canada.
The problems stem from individuals who would be a problem whether they were in uniform or not. I for one, don't appreciate being broadly categorized with this small group, and I'm sure many others feel the same way.
So please, Mr. Maren, feel free to leave your information on this page, however please also show some respect for a military that is for the most part made up of hard working honest Canadians.
Webmaster, Canadian Army Home Page: Wolfville, NS Canada
"The more you get into the killing trades, the more likely you are to get people from small towns and other back-of-beyond places who don't have a great education or career prospects otherwise. They're keen on adventure. They're not there to learn a trade." - Desmond Morton, Military Historian, on the troops involved in the Somalia affair and other incidents.
