HMCS Calgary Spills Oil in Strait of Georgia

Quote
Federal crews are keeping an eye on a 30,000-litre fuel spill from a navy ship in the waters between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

HMCS Calgary was sailing near the Georgia Strait traffic lanes when fuel spilled from the vessel.

Should the title of this thread not reflect what actually happened?

Whoops! Thread the filler cap a little tighter next time lads! In the meantime, there will be no smoking while sea kayaking in the area.

pardon my ignorance but how do you dump 30000 litres of fuel from a warship?  That is one big leak.

It is not about fun. Certain vocal elements in BC are willing to blame Albertans for virtually everything wrong in the world. This shows up in Google searches and is not accurate.

It’s already in Wikipedia, which reinforces a concern that I have that there is something afoul with Wikipedia when it comes to SJW and political issues.

Is 30,000 L a lot? I heard that a ‘Burke’ burns 1000 gallons an hour.  So that might only be a few hours of fuel.

Its a fair amount. Its like filling my truck up 300 times. The fortunate part its F76 so it will disperse quickly.

As the Chief said, it's a fair amount. But it's not a large or "huge" (to quote a president) amount. It's certainly more than a minimal or small spill - but it's not dramatic.

I can think of many reasons why it could have happened, some accidental, some negligent, some merely erroneous, some for pure safety reasons (lesser of two evils type of things). Until the investigation is completed and all the facts known, it would not be useful to speculate.

Lets just say that, if the power of fuel transfer pumps was behind any of this, it is a size of spill that can happen in a very short amount of time.

Not much when compared to the 46 million litres of raw sewage Quebec City just dumped into into St. Lawrence.

I  wonder how often spills occur.

ST. JOHN’S spilled 8,000L of diesel in 2013 and PRESERVER spilled 14,000L of diesel in 2011.

We have spills every year despite our best efforts to not have any. Any spill regardless of the amount either internal or external is reported as a matter of course and investigated. We take great pains to exercise due diligence to prevent or minimize a spill from occurring, it happens.

Which is more that I can say for many other ships in the Georgia Strait.  Remember following a ship that was intentionally pumping stuff overboard in the Juan de Fuca.  US waters side of the lanes, so we called the US Coast guard.  Pretty fast reaction from them to come out, take pictures and water samples.
