I think back in the "old" days of the cold war this happen all the time.  Plus I think their were times they really did hit each other

Think there was actually 2 other incidents also, can't find any details or video on them, so I could be wrong.  But yes, it happened.

The USS Caron got off fairly lightly in that incident.  It's eventual (unexpected) fate, at the hands of its own navy following decommissioning, was not so minor.
