Jobs in field of Human Resources?
« on: March 07, 2014, 21:50:22 »
Hi there,

I am new to the forum and have come looking for some information regarding jobs in the Canadian Forces that would fall under the category of Human Resources.

I am extremely interested in joining the Canadian Forces. I had done some research and saw that the position of Personnel Selection Officer would be in line with my experience and career progression. I recently called a recruiter and he informed me that they will not be recruiting for this position until March 2015 at the earliest, and even then there are no guarantees that there will be available positions.

Currently I am a Human Resources Specialist with a bachelors degree in psychology, and a post grad certificate in Human Resources Management. I am also a Certified Human Resources Professional. (CHRP Professional Designation in Human Resources)

I am trying to find out more information on other jobs in the Canadian Forces that would be similar to PSO, or other HR related jobs. So far the only other position of note is a Logistics Officer, and potentially a Public Affairs Officer.

Can anybody help me out and suggest any other jobs I should look into?

Thank you, your help is much appreciated.

LOg - HR and P Sel are likely the only two that might leverage your education and training.

Its possible that I don't understand the function of a Logistics officer very well.

When I watch the video and read the resources on the CF website, it seems that the position is focused only on supply chain?

Is there a separate department of Logistics for HR? Or different jobs as a logistics officer that would focus on Human Resources as opposed to supply chain?

Thanks for your quick response.

There are quite a few individuals, in all ranks and occupations, holding the CHRP in the CF (including me).  There are no specific HR officers in the CF, but rather they are Logistics officers who have an HR specialty and are located mostly in the Air Force.  I do recall reading a document concerning a study or review regarding the HR specialty and whether more positions at higher headquarters should have HR qualified officers to be used in developing personnel policies.  Most of the HR work in army units are completed by Adjutant's (which could be any occupation) and Resource Management Support Clerks, the occupation that are considered the subject matter experts and  are engaged much more in HR support.  Personnel Selection Officers (PSO's) and Training Development Officers (TDO's) are the other two occupations that are involved in Human Resource support.  Although they do many other functions, think of PSO's as Career and Academic Advisors and TDO's as Learning and Development experts.

As mentioned by Aerobicrunner, if you are interested strictly in HR, then your best bet would be Logistics Offr (Air).
PSel requires a Masters in IO, Cognitivie or Social Psychology or as a minimum a Master in Industrial Relations (HR - must include advanced statistics and research methodology courses) plus work experience.
Public Affairs requires a Masters in Comms, International Relations, Journalism or Public Relations but will accept any Masters or a Bachelors in Comms, Intl Relations Public Relatiosn or Journalism.
Trg Dev requires a Master in Education but will accept an undergrad degree in education with two years teaching experience.
