The German Army is the same way.

Most videos of German marches and marching songs available on line tend to be done within WW2 images and video. That's unfortunately misleading because most German Army songs predate the 2nd World War by a considerable period of time and have been sung as long as German soldiers have been marching.

The following links are ones which plays a number of such songs and do so in a format that clears them of the WW2 connection. (There is some repetition on them but they also have many which aren't on the other video) Unfortunately the lyrics shown are in German without translation.

I spent a considerable time working with the German Army in Shilo in the 1970s and 1980s and one of the little gifts I was given along the way was a small pocket size plasticised song book that is given to each Bundeswehr soldier so that he/she can be proficient in singing on the march.

Was there ever a British/Commonwealth custom to match?

Tons of them. See here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pioneer_(military)#Germany

Over and above what it says about Germany, "pioniere" in effect was the term applied to all engineers. Each German Infantry Division had a "Pionier" Battalion and each Divisional Infantry Regiment, motorcycle battalion and reconnaissance battalion would have an integral "pionier" platoon.
