    Replacing the Subs

Nine months delay and overcosts detected in the starting year of Attack class boats project. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2020-01-14/audit-office-critical-of-future-submarine-procurement/11867134

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

Another guess: 5-6 years to have the first one delivered, then seven icebreakers, one per year (which might be delayed a little bit), plus , after that, planned maintenance, again one per year. We arrive again to the forecasted  20-years. My question now is ... where do you think new submarines...

    Status on Victoria-class Submarines?

I partially agree. However i would rather prefer the 8-to-10 window. Ideally with 10 units there may be 3 subs per ocean plus one under long, planned,  overhaul. Yet I would suggest to have  those 10 split as 6+4, with the last four as an Arctic oriented sub-class in terms of longer submerged...

    Replacing the Subs

Seen the interest on nuclear subs, here it is one recent book review for those interested. https://www.savetheroyalnavy.org/under-pressure-book-review/

    Replacing the Subs

There is always a first time. As it was for SSNs as well. For an AIP submarine, as for any other, to operate under ice, the main three requirements are (AFAIK): 1- Sufficient endurance, depending on the expected patrol missions. 2- Ability to provide oxygen for the crew. Nuclear subs use...

    Replacing the Subs

The sad part of the story is that, according to published costs (well, I would like to know what is or is not included in the contracts...) nine new Virginia class SSNs are expected to cost 22.2 bn USD (approx. 3.3 bn CAD each). Ready for operations under ice, proven,  risk-free design. 12...

Question regarding AIP and O2 generation

Thank you Uzlu for the inputs. Here it is a brief update on the state-of-art of LIB (lithium batteries) for SSKs. https://www.aspistrategist.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Woolner-Jones-media-background-lithium-battery-adoption-for-submarines-20Oct19-FINAL.pdf

Oceanic tug & rescue vessel. A good option for production gaps?

Regarding future USN Navajo, two more oceanic tugs are in the pipeline. https://mobile.navaltoday.com/2019/11/01/us-navy-lays-keel-for-first-navajo-class-salvage-and-rescue-ship/ EDITED: More on tugboats: this russian vessel seems quite similar to the AOPV on functionality and capabilities...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Right , but var. pitch may be interesting while operating the gas turbine for the same reason as DGs. Some other CODLAG vessels use it: german F125, FREMM or F-110. Probably brings in higher efficiency. I understand then that one reason to install fix pitch propellers is noise.

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Surprisingly it is not stated anywhere the power (MW) of the electric motors. This is a key parameter for the cruising speed. In a drawing we can see all 4 diesel generators with EM "running" and claiming 20 knots, but the speed will depend on the power of the EMs. Moreover, all 4 DGs running...

Question regarding AIP and O2 generation

Question regarding AIP and O2 generation

Naval group has developed a diesel reforming system to feed a fuel cell. They call it Fuel cell 2nd generation. Reforming may well be the right path for an AIP- Arctic submarine, and in this field there are three systems under development: - diesel reformation (french Naval group) - methanol...

    Replacing the Subs

While I personally like Soryu the most, please note that delays and cost increases are not unusual in these type of projects. And those problems are solved now (by lengthening the hull). Finally the four S80 plus are to be delivered within next decade 2022-2026) at a cost of about 1.4-1.5...

    Replacing the Subs

Those are in fact a sub-class of the german type 212. At the end of the day there are 3 possible suppliers ... for each coast: Pacific: Japan (Soryu or SS29) South Korea and Oz (Attack- variant of french barracuda). Atlantic: Norwegian-German type 212 CD, Sweed A26, (again a conventional...

    Possible Contender For Future Frigate

https://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/28611/congresss-meddling-could-begin-to-sink-the-navys-frigate-program I recommend reading the attached paper from DoD. Interesting statement regarding increased costs and delivery time if some components are to be sourced in US.

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Actually, both the Fremm and the F-100 offered for the FFG(x) are reduced versions. On the other hand, another bidder as the Independence class is about 3.100 tons. A weighted average, gross-made in my mind (without calculator) drops some 5.000 tons. Being accurate was not my point. Hunter...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

From the rcinet.ca link above ... "The new estimate released Friday pegs the total cost of the CSC program at $69.8 billion over 26 years, including $5.3 billion in pre-production costs; $53.2 billion in production costs; and $11.4 billion in project-wide costs, said the PBO report." That...
