    Hearts of Iron 3

A war that goes to 1957!? Wow. I've never had to go past 1946 but I'd love to try that one day. As for HoI4 I am cautiously optimistic. I really hope they don't throw out the things I love while bringing in features that don't really improve the game. BlackICE - I have to admit I was a bit...

    Hearts of Iron 3

So I am a huge fan of the game, despite some minor flaws. I have yet to find another game that allows you to simulate warfare at the strategic level with such fidelity. I like to control all aspects of the game and don't let AI do anything so games tend to take weeks to play (when I can find...

    Hearts of Iron 3

I see there was an old post about HoI 2 but I'm wondering if there are any other HoI 3 fans out there?

    CH47 Chinook

G2G, Any chance we'll keep the D models post Afg? I know that O&M costs would probably not allow that but I bet there are a lot of potential uses for 6 more airframes. Just dreaming... MG

General's future one to follow for hints at military's course

I would be willing to be large sums of money that Leslie never sits behind the CDS desk. If he did, I would try to win my money back by betting that every air force and navy general/flag officer would resign the next day - and not just because they missed out on the job. Leslie has burned his...

WO. Roberge 2 IRC, Sgt. Kruse 2 CER - Four Wounded: 28 Dec 08

Not sure why I picked tonight to remember WO Roberge, but I have. Actually, rarely a day goes by that I don't think of him and the short time I knew him. He was an exceptional NCO and quite frankly he was intimidating! Nonetheless, I loved working with him and will be forever grateful for his...

    MCDVs and future usage

Wow. Was it going down hill at the time? I think that with a stabilized weapon system, the MCDV is still very useful for inshore patrol (Georgia Strait, Gulf of St Lawrence, etc.) and harbour defence/mine sweeping. Besides, they are the best thing that ever happened to NAVRES. MG

    Skydex Blast Protection

Ecco, Yup, checked OPCIEWG. Haven't yet seen anything that says Skydex pads don't offer the same or better protection. I'm not saying that OPCIEWG is saying our current leather/styrofoam solution isn't working, I'm just saying that I can't find any evidence of anyone saying formally that the...

    Skydex Blast Protection

I hate to do this but I have to chime in here. McG - I have access to many of the sources you are talking about and I have found no evidence whatsoever of trials or tests that show that the in-service suspension system provides better blast and blunt force protection than any alternative. That...

Should Canada adopt the LAV III (AKA: Stryker) as its primary armoured vehicle family?

Oh really? Not that it matters, but when I read this line, I realized I had no interest in anything you subsequently wrote. You might want to check your facts. MG

    3RCR at Ft Bliss

Yes I was being sarcastic and yes I disagree that Fort Bliss equaled "training as we fight". I take it you weren't on the ex? Sure the mountains looked a bit like Afghanistan from a distance (more like around Kabul than the more eroded mountains in Kandahar). However, the terrain had more...

    3RCR at Ft Bliss

;D I bet it looked that way but those rentals were only a small fraction of the cost. Rail/road movement, airlift and tent and equipment rentals ate up a big chuck of that $30 million. IMHO they could have tacked 2 weeks onto Wainwright (7 total) and saved the taxpayer about $18 million while...

    3RCR at Ft Bliss

Geo - Ft Bliss is a nice trg area!? It's big. I'll give you that. But so much of it is off limits due to environmental, archaeological and other reasons that it quickly becomes a small trg area. And on top of all that are the incredible Range Control restrictions that limited us even further...

    History of Canada in Afghanistan

"The Bear Went Over the Mountain"  by Lester Grau. A better read is his next book "The Other Side of the Mountain" by Grau and Ali Jalali which deals with tactics from the muj side. Also, "Taliban" by Ahmed Rashid and "Koran, Kalashnikov and Laptop" by Giustozzi are great reads.
