British sailors arrested at gunpoint by Iranian navy.

Frankly, those that are arguing that the RN should have shot up the Iranian patrol boats and "rescued" their personnel are ignoring political realities and are second-guessing tactical decisions made on the water at the time - something I'm loathe to do.  If you weren't there, you don't know -...

    Top-heavy military throws spending off-balance

As usual when the media reports on rank issues, there are more than a few red-herrings here. First, the officer to NCM ratio in units isn't all that different than in previous decades.  The fact that a platoon commander may wear an extra half stripe is (1) still not the norm - despite what...

    TF 3-08 Information... Anyone?

Westie 47:  Look here... http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/lfwa/tf108/faq_tf108.htm#Q4 Pretty clear, no? Moreover: http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/lfwa/tf108/tf108_training.htm#join These have been up for some time, and you can hardly claim a dearth of information.  Your rant is misplaced and...

    Canadian CAMAA & the 'Shut-out' BC-17X

I'm out of my lane here, and Gobsmacked post is incredibly difficult to read and digest, but I feel duty-bound to point out the following from an Army perspective: Against what requirement?  Why we would we be lifting a troop a year?  How does this benefit the Army? A single simulator...

CBC today "NATO chief rejects claim Canada bears Afghan burden"

My 2 cents: First, I am not of the opinion that we "freeloaded" off NATO for years.  After all, the role of our NATO contribution was to defend Europe from the Soviet hordes; I don't recall many NATO countries (US aside) directly contributing to the defence of Canada.  While I might agree that...

    Swords

Once you're in a unit, ask permission to carry it.  Given its history, I would be shocked if you were told "no".

The General Hillier Years. The Merged Superthread

A quick glance at Prof Byers' CV reveals the typical academic:  tenured, left wing, anti-US and anti-military, no practical experience and taxpayer funded.   See here: http://www.ligi.ubc.ca/collateral/images/uploads/cv_byers.pdf His article misses so many points and dredges up such old...

    Fmr GG Becoming PPCLI Col-in-Chief

Just for clarity, Regular Force combat arms units do not have Honorary Colonels (although Reserve units do).  They have Colonels-in-Chief, typically an august personage and a Royal, and Colonels of the Regiment - usually (always?) a very senior former serving officer.

    Battle Honours for Afghanistan

I'm hoping that TheHead's hyperbole wasn't aimed at me, as he has no idea of what my personal service has entailed. He has, though, intruded upon what was an decent academic discussion with a pointless, arrogant rant. Which brings me to my first point.  TheHead appears to claim that he's part...

    Afghan Detainee Mega Thread

It sounds to me that Professor Attaran was looking for the smoking gun indicating Canada's very own Abu Gharib...and lo and behold, he's "found it".  As a couple of posters have pointed out, the feeding frenzy has already started - without a wit of questioning the motives of this individual in...

    news story on medals

There's no denying that.  However, as Geo pointed out, they were awarded against US criteria by the US and, in my experience, the Americans tend to award Bronze Stars (meritorious version) to the leadership.  Indeed, there are very senior officers that I can name who recently received them for...

    news story on medals

GO!!! For the upteenth thousandth time, a Bronze Star without a "V" is not a decoration for valour - it's a Meritorious Service Award, full stop.  That's where Worthington's story is out to lunch and where all the whining - that's gone on relentlessly since 2002 - is completely misplaced. TR, out.

The vast majority of the new troops are American...  Are we shocked?

    news story on medals

As usual with things "Worthington", this is wrong and misleading.  First, the "Star of Courage" is not awarded for service in Afghanistan, as OP ATHENA is a combat operation.  Thus far, a single "Star of Military Valour" has been announced.  They're two different medals. As for service medals...

    Chinese Use Anti-Satellite Weapon

Of course, one wonders where all the bleating about the "militarization of space" is from the leftists and peace campaigners out there...  Surely the NDP will hold a press conference to denounce this latest escalation of the arms race...?

    FWSAR (CC130H, Buffalo, C27J, V22): Status & Possibilities

Some pertinent information from airforce-technology.com: Considering we're buying C-130Js and Lockheed-Martin's role in producing the Spartan, the reasoning behind decision becomes somewhat clearer, no?

    FWSAR (CC130H, Buffalo, C27J, V22): Status & Possibilities

Civmick: The issues I have with the "follow the process" approach that our puppet masters have abused for so long is that there has been a very disturbing tendency for military requirements to take a back seat to both regional industrial porkbarrelling and to "political" considerations...

    FWSAR (CC130H, Buffalo, C27J, V22): Status & Possibilities

Exactly.  Why should sub-standard equipment be "given a shot" simply because its manufacturer is whining?  DND publishes very definitive requirements for equipment it is planning to replace or for new capabilities.  If there are manufacturers that can meet those requirements, they can compete...
