Badger - I didn't know the Home Service battalions of the RIR were considered "Regular" - I know they were full time but you only served on your own doorstep. I thought you went Regular if you joined the 1st Bn?

I know they are Commando trained - I was just pointing out the jobs they had and the fact that they would not normally be expected to carry out this sort of task

We in the UK had similar experiences where well known TA infantry regiments were converted to LAA/Searchlight regiments and only saw home service. Its a shame that new conscript regiments couldn't have been formed so that the iheritage and nfantry skills base wasn't lost.

The Ram never saw combat (apart from OP vehicles).  It is interesting that the Dutch concreted them hull down used them as pill boxes during the cold war.

wasn't one Sherman per troop a Firefly with the British 17 pounder gun? More than a match for the Mk4, Panther & Tiger. Also, don't forget the Germans were usually hull down or in prepared positions where they sprung ambushes so it wouldn't have mattered too much if both sides had identical...
