Niner-D,
I can't see the whole of the Royal Regiment of Scotland being issued kilts - unless they are part purchased by the regiment and sold through the PRI (unit based shop selling kit). The cost for what is just 1 garment is astronomical compared to trews. I think that in future you will see...
Sadly I never met anyone from the Glorious Glosters. I did serve with a few RGBW (Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire regiment - merged in 1994) in Bosnia - good lads.
Now the Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry (LI added as an honour) are to form the 1st Bn...
Just found out the book is now available from amazon.ca

It probably works out the same price if you consider the discount from the UK site but add postage ;)
Well the UK Reserves (all services) don't get a pension - or medical care & dental care (unless they are mobilised). If they are wounded on ops they are repatriated - discharged - and they have to make an appointment with the local hospital for after care (or in some cases for further operations)
Desert Fox
A TA battalion is made up the same way as a regular battalion - Fire Support Company (anti tank, mortar, recce & machine gun platoons), HQ Company (signal & MT platoons, sections of assault pioneers, cooks, provosts, int cell, admin. etc) and three (sometimes four) Rifle Companies...
It seems that you are getting shafted the same way the TA (Territorial Army) infantry has been in the UK. Originally, we had volunteer regiments, that became battalions of a parent regular regiment. But those battalions got messed around with endlessly. Inf changed to Engineer, then Arty, then...
Rhyming slang is still used in East London, but so is "Mickey Mouse" slang - that is made up slang. The original idea of Cockney rhyming slang was to allow market traders to talk about their dodgy dealings without the Police or their informants understanding a word of what was being said. So, as...
when I was in Boz (UN & IFOR) the Germans were restricted to Croatia because of their previous history when they, with the help of the Croats, exterminated Serbs during WW2. They did escort convoys up to the Boz border, but obviously were worried about the Serbs as they would have 1 armoured...
The term septic for Americans is a slang word used by British Soldiers - Septic Tank = Yank
Its not an assertion as to how we see them
The "affectionate" to calling Canadians colonials - and it was a question - that's why there was a ? at the end of the sentance. I was only asking as I would...
Could be this:
Wildtrack
Publishing Information:
Penguin Group, 1988; Paperback and Audio Cassette
A crippled veteran of the Falkland's War sails into the north Atlantic to discover whether a famous television presenter is a murderer.
Don't you think that "our Colonial Cousins" sounds good? Its not an insult - just an affectionate term.
As for the Septics - they do have some excellent kit - but the way they go about business in foreign lands does beg the question "do we copy them or do what is right?" I'm not anti US, far...
the whole area of procurement in the British Army is a joke. We have even reintroduced a vehicle that first saw service on the West German Plain during the Cold war in the 60's - the FV 432! And that replaced the joke called the Saxon - an armoured 4 ton truck!
You Canadians are lucky with the...
I would highly recommend the Alexander Kent series (over 20 books!) about the naval service of Richard Bolitho (Cornish name pronounced Boll-eye-vo). It starts from when he was a midshipman up to when he died as an admiral, and is continuing with his nephew's sea service.
Try...
Possible - but as its peace enforcing in Darfur a normal brigade set up is the norm with possibly a few SF teams attached for STA, close obs & int gathering.
I find it curious that France had 200 SF in theatre - the SAS/SBS would only have roughly 60. Maybe its just the media calling para or...
I would not be surprised if another one or two are announced next spring - The Gurkhas and Royal Fusiliers had a few worthy incidents, but then again the criteria for getting medals seems to be getting tighter and tighter in the UK.
