    Bayonet question?

I think cam paint oughta fix that up. Likewise burnt cork or just tarnish from a candle, or other open flame.

    Bayonet question?

Germans were executed for carrying sawback bayonets because...any excuse is a good one I guess...it broke no rules, but it looked nasty and troops kill a lot of people during assaults, irregardless of status. The brits hadn't issued a sawback in decades at that point, but the practice had been...

    Deconstructing "Progressive " thought

The situation has changed. Post-secondary education exists now as a self-perpetuating conspiracy. A BA is wholly without value in getting a job, because most of the work force in their 20s has them. Only the trades are still useful and for years the value and respectability of those has been...

What book are you reading now?

Come and take them by Tom Kratman. Literally just finished Amazon Legion and picked up Come and Take Them. His books have this great way of shaking up my thinking and making me question my preconceptions. I'd recommend Amazon Legion especially to anyone involved in training.

    The Robot military

No kidding! I wonder why more people do not see this. You take the blood out of the game and war will seem like a more attractive option.

Component Transfer ( CT ) - Reserve to Regular

yeah...a long wait is what i figured. The FB thing is a bit of a relief though. I honestly find it very difficult to stay in touch with people otherwise. I just figured that maybe privacy would become one of those things we willingly give up while in uniform; like freedom of expression, ect...

Component Transfer ( CT ) - Reserve to Regular

How can I find out what the Trade I an CTing for will be looking at? I will have 10 years reserve infantry in june. My education (military history BA) will be complete this spring. I put in for Int Officer. I have already been told that I should get rid of my Facebook by random people I know. I...

US Army plans radical upgrade of Stryker Brigades ("DVH" conversions)

That surprised me, as I had though the M93 Wolf was still the primary CBRN recce platform. They better figure out something to do for ground pressure; or else they will have brigades of road-bound pillboxes. Good roads at that.

US Army plans radical upgrade of Stryker Brigades ("DVH" conversions)

Are they doing anything to reduce ground-pressure and improve cross-country performance? I saw the pic of the tracked stryker prototype, but is that a conversion package?

    Why Machiavelli Still Matters

We haven't the balls for The Prince here in the west, it is why our time is passing, as surely as Europe's already has past.

    Continuity of MG capabilities; Vickers-C1/5-C6

I think I read about one of their battles years ago. Taking a trench system from the Argies and finishing the battle with their captured ammo? quote author=daftandbarmy link=topic=112678/post-1270659#msg1270659 date=1384902112] Slight side track: the book 'Excursion to Hell' is an excellent...

    Continuity of MG capabilities; Vickers-C1/5-C6

Those are the same issues I forsee. About all I am certain of at this point is that the caddy-bag is not viable for what we want to do. We tend to hit the bush and stay there, with rucks. Moving by truck and foot. Anything that makes that harder than it has to be is on my no-go list. We will...

    Continuity of MG capabilities; Vickers-C1/5-C6

That's really cool stuff guys, but naturally I am limited to the L4 Tripod. In the det we have two guys with jump rucks and I have a Packbord, but I do not want to bring that relic out because it defeats my primary purpose of ruck+SF kit. Gah; I'm being slow, it was...

    Continuity of MG capabilities; Vickers-C1/5-C6

If I had more pull and was guarnteed this job for at least another year, one idea I had, via the Airborne Combat Engineer thinktank sight was a modified golf bag carrier, ironically.

    Continuity of MG capabilities; Vickers-C1/5-C6

I agree with most of what Thucydides has said. But; indirect fire was built into the vickers/maxim guns, by use of a sight I am used to calling a "collimating" sight and the barr and stround rangefinder. This is detailed in a book called "with a machinegun to the somme". I believe this was a...

    Talking to the Taliban (merged)

I despair of us ever understanding these people at an institutional level. We lost the war as soon as we set our pullout to a schedule, by entertaining the prospect of negotiation we could not have done more to express our weakness and vulnerability. Are westerners truly incapable of...

    Continuity of MG capabilities; Vickers-C1/5-C6

Okay, then historically, this is almost unheard of. Normally when a capability (indirect fire) goes away. it goes away forever. Plenty of nations using Vickers guns and similar weapons, which later used the FN MAG, never retained indirect fire doctrine. even if they went direct from one to the...

    Does Character Matter?

If it truly is personal, assuming no lawbreaking is involved, I could hardly care less. I care about competence and professional honesty, so long as the personal problems, do not become my problems.
