Live reports on CBC Radio Ottawa are saying that the gunman then went to Parliament Hill, hijacked a car on the hill, drove up to centre block & went inside. They are saying he has now been killed. There may be others.
We did the civvy dress thing for a while during the Gulf War as well, in Ottawa at least. Then a few years later, when I had occasion to visit a U.S. base for the first time, it was almost a relief being in such a flag-waving culture, where the uniform was seen openly & with pride. I thus came...
Maybe it's because I have no experience with ships, but I found this quote from the orig. article (the first post in this thread) particularly impressive: "Each link of the anchor's chain is 51 centimetres by 28 centimetres and weighs about 34 kilograms."
A single link!
For one of the ship's...
I know some moderate Muslims who would disagree with you. :) Extremism exists in most creeds, and in those of no creed. Let's not make this into an anti-religion or anti-any particular religion polemic - instead, let's focus our attention on the behaviour itself, and examining how...
After a number of posts describing where the police are and what they're doing, CBC has now closed comments on its live blog. Not sure if that will shut down the automatic Twitter posts, but that seems prudent.
Edit: nope... just saw a pic of two officers behind a house. Can't imagine the...
The police are adept at looking up FB profiles all on their own. And if people are giving the police tips on where they are seeing the shooter, I'm not sure that means the media have to report on his name and his past.
However - as you say, once his picture is out, it would not be long...
Here's CBC's live feed, as well: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/moncton-shooting-suspect-spotted-3-times-as-manhunt-continues-1.2665707
Meanwhile, I can't help but wonder what good is served by all the focus on the shooter, his name, what he was wearing, the public examining every...
Mods, I did a search for this topic before posting, and it didn't come up. Sorry about that nonetheless.
Edit: just did another one for the words Saskatchewan and pin, appearing together. No other thread about this. Anyway, feel free to move it wherever else it would better fit.
Another thing: The LG's office reports that in some cases local Legion branches and military units have been receiving the pin in batches and presenting it to the recipients, which may be preferable to some folks, compared to getting it in the mail.
Unfortunately, by taking something that was meant to be quick & easy, and making it slow and difficult, government just makes itself look bad. I mean Twitter, but it probably applies to VAC applications too. It was ever thus.
Nice job on the shields, by the way. Wish they didn't resonate.

A new initiative from the office of the Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan, to recognize residents of Saskatchewan who've served in or with the military. Almost any Canadian military service is recognized - either as a CF mbr or police...
This article, including the story of one veteran who died of cancer while in a seven-month queue (he was supposed to see a doctor within a week), can speak for itself - but here are a few arresting snippets...
The government loves to consolidate in the name of savings. For anyone dealing with the loss of IT services in the "more efficient" SSC these days, this kind of tactic will be all too familiar. Staff is reduced, workload isn't - with the result that someone gets a promotion for saving money...
In the quote I read, in both the National Post and CBC, he implied nothing of the kind. The actual quote was: “When our forces are facing a crisis of eight military suicides in two months, there’s never been a more important time to maintain those services.” This seems to be linking the...
Actually, there are several different things that can cause CO poisoning (that's carbon monoxide....). A few days ago a family in Ottawa heard a funny noise coming from their hot water heater; they called Enbridge, who said it wasn't an emergency and they should make an appt to have it serviced...
