The Reserve Thread- A Merged Collection of Q & A's

it depends whether you are planning on going officer or NCM, since you have a degree, you can join as an officer, and your Basic Officers Training Course will be held over the summer. if you join as an NCM it is possible that your basic training and SQ courses will be run on weekends during the...

    questions on joining

to find out where to sign up look under ‘recruiting‘ in the yellow pages, or under ‘National Defence‘ in the blue pages. as far as your eyesight is concerned, yes it is an issue. if you want to be in the combat arms (infantry, armour, artillery, engineers) you will need a V3 or better as a...

    corrective lenes

about wearing glasses, for BMQ wearing glasses won‘t be a problem, though you might want to wear contacts on the range if you see better with them. you might want to get a sports strap for when you go into the field.

    Looking for answers

i‘ve been in the reserves for about 10 months now, so i‘m not sure how relevant my imput is. i joined mostly for the same reasons you‘re contemplating, and i plan to transfer to the reg force when i finish university. in any case, whenever someone asks me why i joined, or heckles me in uniform...

    Tuition Subsidy? (RES)

you have to attend at least 75% of training and there are a bunch of other requirements like pass the personal weapons test and finish BMQ. i‘m not sure what all of them are though.

What were the greatest battles for Canada in WW1/WW2?

this issue of heroism is just a matter of semantics. i agree that all those who participated in the war effort deserve our highest gratitude and respect, but as M. Dorosh said of VC winners "they had that extra something special" and that something special is what i associate with heroism...

What were the greatest battles for Canada in WW1/WW2?

most of the tactics used at Vimy were already developed and practiced by the French, including locating German artillery positions using hearing stations. but, i guess Currie should be commended for braking away from British practices and building on what the French had learned. i think...

What were the greatest battles for Canada in WW1/WW2?

to name just a few: Pte ‘Smokey‘ Smith comes immediately to mind, as do Tommy Prince and Cpt Paul Triquet. personally, i think very highly of Col Meritt, for a person with only one day of fighting, he consistently showed a great deal of courage.

    Korea

i think N. Korea is the reason the US is pushing so hard to attack Iraq. while N. Korea is the larger threat, the US realizes they would be able to take out the Iraqi threat quicker (pending all these delays in the UN), allowing them to concentrate completely on N. Korea. i guess in a political...

    Saluting... just curious

after doing a bit of reading, i found that the British had gained momentum at the end of the war, that was when the raids on Washington and Baltimore and the occupation of Maine took place. perhaps if Brock had survived Queenston heights, the British side would have had a bit more momentum...

    BMQ Failure Rate

it‘s pretty low, i‘m pretty sure there were only 3 failures on my BMQ, and that‘s out of an original 56 (i think). a few more people had to leave for medical reasons and one guy quit.

Total time involved for being inducted in the Reserves

there‘s not a lot of waiting between handing in the application and the testing. it‘s after the testing is complete that there are longer delays. i think this is mostly because your medical exam is forwarded to Borden for approval.

    Selection

this is when all that waiting that everyone complains about takes place. mine only took a couple of weeks, i‘ve heard some say it took a few months.

    Saluting... just curious

i think it‘s quite clear the British won the war, they managed to take quite a bit of ground from the Americans before they gave it all back in the Treaty of Ghent.

    Paid Education [Merged]

ROTP at RMC might not be the best idea, as you will likely have to start from first year. ROTP at a civy U is a pretty good deal because you can apply no matter what year you‘re in. they will pay your full tuition as well as an allowance for textbooks and a salary (if you live in res, room and...

    Image Technician

yeah, those are taken by image techs. just remember that you‘ll probably spend a few years doing some pretty dull stuff first. talk to a recruiter about it, they‘d know more.

    Image Technician

image tech is an air force MOC, they usually start out taking pictures of things like accidents or other stuff that needs to be documented like that. later on you can move onto more exciting things like being the governor general‘s personal photographer.

    Funny Americans

it‘s funny Americans take so much credit for saving France in WWI and WWII, but you don‘t often hear them acknowledging the French for saving them during the War of Independance.
