SAR/non-core MH-related info (split from: CH-148 Cyclone Progress)

The whole issue here comes down to money and government priorities.  There is not money because our government does not feel that defending and protecting Canadians is important.  Governments will not be fired by voters if the SAR helos don't fly.  They will if they view a threat to their "free"...

SAR/non-core MH-related info (split from: CH-148 Cyclone Progress)

Other budgets funding these noncombat missions should be considered.  DND could provide people & bases for SAR, TC and the Provs could provide the funding for equipment & operations.  As well, I have always thought there should be a completely separate budget for capital projects like the C17 &...

SAR/non-core MH-related info (split from: CH-148 Cyclone Progress)

I do not think that a military that is struggling to maintain core com,bat capabilities needs units like the Snowbirds.  I see the value in public relations, but perhaps roles like SAR & Snowbirds could be funded from another budget, outside the DND budget.

SAR/non-core MH-related info (split from: CH-148 Cyclone Progress)

SAR is a very high profile role that gets the media and publics attention.  It is one of the few roles we do where we come into direct contact with Canadians as we are saving their lives.  what could be better than that.... but, domestic SAR is not a combat role.  Now if our SAR units had a CSAR...

    CH-148 Cyclone Progress

Could not agree more.  Politics screws everything up.  Takes the simple solution and complicates it for the sake of complicating it.  Like the name Baden guy, I was there as a kid '74-78.  Lived in Wintersdorf.

    CH-148 Cyclone Progress

Agree with everything you say here except for the SAR role.  I do not believe the military should be doing domestic SAR, that is the Coast Guards job, but that's my opinion.  Giving the maritime helo folks the EH101, plus each brigade a sqn of them, and then have 1 Chinook & 1 Apache sqn at...

    CH-148 Cyclone Progress

I agree 1000% about the government and lack of $$.  But that's where leadership comes to play.  I do not want to sound negative, but we do have a problem within the AF, a serious problem.  we have "de-fanged" the AF, taken away much of its COMBAT capability.  The role of the airforce is AIR...

    CH-148 Cyclone Progress

Chinooks on a frigate will not work, too big.  You might be able to put the army version on one of the new proposed supply ships, not sure of the deck dimensions.  But you can train the maritime helo guys to insert troops and their helos do fit on the boats.

    CH-148 Cyclone Progress

This is one area we certainly have problems in.  Again, too much with too little of the wrong helo.  The Cyclones will be a great machine when we finally get them.  This is all a result of AF leadership that has no idea they are running and AF, let alone how to run one.  I can say that, I am AF...

Canada asks for Chinook design changes; military expert worry about delay

I heard that CSOR & Dwyer Hill folks were relocating to Trenton.  MV would make sense, but you'd need millions in upgrades.  Would be nice to see another base opened.  I would love to see some bases opened in areas we are not in, such as SW Ontario....

Canada asks for Chinook design changes; military expert worry about delay

It come down to infrastructure!!  The hangers at the army bases are for Griffons.  Chinook will not fit in the hanger, too big.  That means $$ for hanger upgrades.  Mountainview's hangers are WW2 vintage, will not work, you'd have to spend millions to upgrade them and the airfield.  I have heard...

Canada asks for Chinook design changes; military expert worry about delay

This would have been the approach any normal country might have taken, but I do not think Canada would have.  There is no way the Libs would have replaced/upgraded them (you know the Sea King story) they would not even replace or upgrade the SAR Labs.  I am sure you were around in the '90s. ...

Canada asks for Chinook design changes; military expert worry about delay

You can't base the whole AF in Trenton.  Trenton has a full ramp as it is, & no hanger space.  Hanger space is the driving force, & Bagotville has plenty.  Do not forget politics, of all the new aircraft the CF is buying, none to date are based in Quebec.  Quebec only has Grifs & F18's......

Canada asks for Chinook design changes; military expert worry about delay

The old CH47 fleet would not do us any good today if we'd kept them.  they were old when we got rid of them, the Dutch paid big bucks to rebuild them.  Canada was not & would not have done that.  We would have 40 year old Chinooks right now that were no good. As for training, there are some...

Canada asks for Chinook design changes; military expert worry about delay

The issue is hanger space believe it or not!!  He mentioned that Bagotville has the space, and it does.  There is a big hanger ther built for USAF AWACS ops.  As well, we can't forget politics. He was asked the question about distance to customer, and said that as far as 2 & 5 Bge, not an...

Canada asks for Chinook design changes; military expert worry about delay

I was in Winnipeg recently and attended a Q&A session with the 1 CAD General.  One of the many question brought up was Chinooks.  He basically said it comes down to what they can get first of the production line.  He did not answer direct questions about 47F vs 47H, so nothing to add there. ...

    F-22 or F-35

100 is not a high number, 1000 is!!  We have seen that 80 CF18s is not enough, we are having trouble sustaining a NORAD & CAS commitment with only 80 jets, keeping in mind a larger number of them belong to the tarining squadron and are not avail for ops.  If we decided with the F-35 to do all...

    F-22 or F-35

We are only one election away from becoming the USA advisary, so NO, they will not sell us F22's.  The F35 is for the export market, and at $40 million each we may see 100.

The Politics of Yellow Ribbons - MERGED

What about those who support the military, the ones who want us to be successful, don't they get a say.  Why are we always catering to these whiny sniveling wimps in this country????
