News Release
Annual Report on the Administration of Military Justice 2005-2006
NR–06.065 - October 3, 2006

OTTAWA–The Honourable Gordon O’Connor, Minister of National Defence is pleased to announce that the 2005-2006 Annual Report of the Judge Advocate General on the administration of military justice in the Canadian Forces was tabled Thursday, September 28, in the House of Commons.

This annual report acknowledges a number of developments in the military justice system. The report clearly indicates that our military justice system is indeed providing the Canadian Forces with the necessary tools to maintain and enforce discipline in accordance with the rule of law.

The seventh annual report conveys much of the work done during the reporting period, including:

an overview of service tribunal activity;
the proceedings of the military justice committees;
the results of military justice surveys;
military justice training activities;
JAG initiatives relating to the administration of military justice;
action taken in response to recommendations in the Lamer report for improvement of the military justice system; and
legal support to Canadian Forces Transformation and the new command structure.
The National Defence Act provides that the Judge Advocate General is responsible for the superintendence of the administration of military justice in the Canadian Forces and requires the Judge Advocate General to report annually to the Minister of National Defence on this subject. This report covers the period 1 April 2005 to 31 March 2006.

The Director of Defence Counsel Services and the Director of Military Prosecutions are required to report annually to the Judge Advocate General, and their reports are included as annexes to the annual Report.
