For us older folks (40+) trying to get into Officer roles in the Reserves, I’m wondering if folks have any advice as to career tactics.  Some officer roles are quite competitive to get into. If we get interviewed but not hired, the wait can be another cycle of 4-6 months and beyond. Time is not on our side.

One option is to switch into an NCM position or go for another trade that’s hirjng. But is that dumb?  We’d be stuck in a rank for who knows how long. But at least we are in.  Or we’d be moving into a different trade that may be hard to explain to the next interviewer.

Curious if people have been through this riddle recently and any advice.

If you want to go the officer route go ahead as long as you can complete the training. 50yo+ folks have joined, completed BMQ BMOQ 2, BMOQA and their specific officer training. This is longer than the NCM route but if you're physically and mentally fit enough, and career/family support is there then go for it.
