Hello everyone, i know the title is a mouthful.. :blotto:

I am submitting my papers at my recruiter's office next month to start BMQ and I want to purchase a full bio/chem preparedness kit for my wife before I leave. I have used the search bar and havent found any info that im looking for nor can i seem to locate any Canadian based websites that specialize in this field, so i figured that one of our finest may have an in on this kind of subject that he/she would be willing to share. I'm looking for a site like this American based one called approvedgasmasks.com, they sell complete head to toe protection kits for rather reasonable prices, I would like to avoid buying from the states if i can so if anyone out there has a source for this kind of material I would love to hear about it.

Thanks in advance!! :salute:

Excuse me? Why would you do that?

That's what I thought when I read this post.  Expecting a war while you're at BMQ, Rhodsey?

Hahaaaa....wellllll an ounce of prevention right?

Its intended to be the capstone of the kit i have already assembled for here (water purification/3 mnth supply of frz dried foods/multi fuel cook kit ect ect)

Call me prepared, not paranoid.  I would go out of my mind with worry if something unforeseen was to occur and i had no way of helping her.

No i am in Kitchener Ontario.  And the CFRC is the Kitchener office... I dont get why some of you find this to be such a bizarre question.

There was a thread on this sort of thing a while ago.  You just seem to be taking it farther than the average person.

If your going to use it to spice up your bedroom life (all that latex and rubber), go ahead, but otherwise whats the point?  Is there some imminent event you are concerned about?

Ok, being practical then - Will you also teach her how to use the decontamination mitts and how to excrete safely?  After all, if you cant do the drills properly you're only delaying death by a few hours until that inevitable bathroom break breaches suit integrity and future survival.  Or will she only need it until she can get into the family NBCRTW bunker?

There must be someone around here who knows of a Canadian company who supplies what im looking for. As far as "whats the point?"  No offense but I find that to be a silly and irrelevant question about my query here (something is ALWAYS better than nothing) and as of now i have everything for my survival kit except this. I dont know of any impending danger...and I dont intend to use it in the bedroom and yes i enjoy penut butter on ritz crackers.

so.. now that we have that out of the way am I barkin up the wrong mail man here?  Should i bring my query elsewhere?

Well, I went poking around the internet for you. If you're willing to spend your money on this, I'm willing to help you. All I managed to find was a blog by a bunch of nutbars, who mostly didn't seem to know what they were talking about. I've lived in houses without running water (well, you run to the pump and get it), and cooked on a wood stove, also heated water for laundry, bathing, and heated the house with it. Better to read the thread you were guided to above. At least these people know what they're talking about!

I also looked at the site you spoke of. I think you should go for the $1690.00 one. A fool and his money are soon parted.

I think the point is very valid - what exactly are you trying to protect yourself/significant others from?  There are different types of suits out there depending on what exactly you are trying to protect yourself from, and the price range varies dramatically on the level of protection you are looking for.  There is also the issue of durability - some suits are designed for temporary improvised use just to get out of areas of danger and others are designed for long-term wear.  Will you use a filtrating mask or independent air supply?  What layer of protection will it need?  And like I mentioned already, who will train you/spouse to use it?  There's no point buying a piece of gear that gathers dust beacuse no one knows how to use it.  If you are as serious as you claim to be, then these are questions you should be considering.  However your response makes it sound like you just want to check off a box on a list - why not just buy a pair of plastic coveralls and be done with it?

My question is why now? How come you didn't go rooting for one before you decided to hand in your application?

Any gear is fracking useless to the owner unless they have knowledge on how it works, what it does and how to actually use it themselves.

To answer greys response, i am looking for something like this: http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/package-deal201.htm  and it is intended for a type of "its time to get the hell out of dodge" scenario. Im not looking for any kind of long term air powered unit, just something that will work to keep airborne contaminants off and out for long enough to get to a safer place, or last long enough for help to arrive.  It behoothes me why more people dont include a simple kit like this in there survival nest.  I already have two simple half mask 3m respirators but im looking for a more high quality set with the full face guard.

In your searches you are probably using the wrong key words to get to Canadian equipment.  Looking for 'NBCW' or 'CBW' or "biohazard' will get you primarily US and international sites.  To get to Canadian retailers you need to look under 'safety equipment', after which you will find numerous hits for Canadian companies.

(e.g. http://www.canadasafety.com/)

However, most of this gear is commercial/labratory designed, you wont find many designed for military/camoflauge use...

Erm-m what does "behoothes" mean? I couldn't find it in any dictionary. My thought is if the worst happens, you just might be better off bending over and kissing you a** goodbye.

I agree with Medtech.

I'm not an expert in any shape or form... but how do you plan on decontaminating yourself once the threat is over?  How
will you know when the threat is over?  How will owning a suit help you through a prolonged exposure?  How many extra canisters
will you need?

It's not just as simple as owning one.  There are so many factors that affect usage or human error that will nullify the fact
of its protection.

From a Risk Analyst perspective (ALE) Annual Lose Expectancy the risk of attack or exposure is minute and simply mitigated by accepting the risk.
As everyone else has been saying it's not financially feasible to protect against this risk.  (Been there... got the Risk Analyst Diploma)

If you have your heart absolutely set on doing this then please at least wait until AFTER BMQ to purchase this.  At least it will give you some
additional information to make a more informed purchase.

I can't seem to find any Canadian sites.  Perhaps we're not as paranoid as Americans?  ;)

Try these:

http://www.quakekare.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=14&Page=2

http://www.probuy.net/dir/41.html

http://www.firstaid-supply.com/disastersurvival/disastersurvivalkits1.html?wcw=overture

This one is Canadian but I'm not about to go through 14 pages of catalogs: http://www.hazmasters.com/industry/?ind_cat_id=1005

Seeing how you're looking for Canadian suppliers, you've probably found most of these.

IMHO, you're going a little over the top, so to speak.

BTW, it's behooves not behoothes and you've used it in the wrong context here.

In this case, you may feel it behooves you to have this kit.  Dictionary - Behooves

When I was little, I always thought it had to do with horses and such!  ;D

Hey thanks for the help guys, I think ill just bite the bullet and buy from the American site.

Heres a scenario for those of you who think something like this : http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/package-deal401.htm  is completely useless, Your sitting in your apartment or home in a city (in my case kitchener) Your watching tv or browsing the net or listening to the radio and you hear that a train car container carrying chlorine or some other very deadly liquid/gas has derailed near the city or in the city and is leaking heavily, and the city is being evacuated because of the high likelihood of death. Would it then not be advantageous for you to have the above kit in your possession to help increase your chances of getting out of the city alive?? Or should one just do as some of the other posters have suggested and "kiss your arse goodbye?"

I just think that at least having a plan for something like this is a good idea and well worth the money.

And by the way i had no idea I was using the word "behooves" in the wrong way... haha  :-Xthanks for the correction!

You know; most of us hearing such warnings would follow the advice of the authorities and evacuate in a safe direction, well away from any danger.

Can I ask you what kind of disaster plan you are putting in place for your loved ones for the following:

1.    Fire
2.    Flood
3.    Tornado
4.    Power Outage (over 24 hrs)
5.    Lightning Strikes
etc.
