OTTAWA - The Government of Canada today announced the
decision to deploy about 450 Canadian Forces members for a
period of six months to the United Nations Mission in
Ethiopia and Eritrea UNMEE as part of the multinational
Stand-by High Readiness Brigade SHIRBRIG. This will be
the first deployment of SHIRBRIG.
This decision is in response to a UN request for military
personnel and equipment to monitor the implementation of a
cessation of hostilities agreement signed by the
belligerents on June 18, 2000. Canada is a strong supporter
of SHIRBRIG and has a continuing interest in ensuring
international peace and security and this mission
represents Canada‘s ongoing commitment to peacekeeping in
Africa.
The Canadian contingent, called Task Force East Africa, is
scheduled to start arriving in Eritrea in early December,
2000. The Canadian Task Force will be formed with a company
group composed mainly of infantry from the 2nd Battalion,
Royal Canadian Regiment and support troops from CFB
Gagetown, N.B., with a national command and support element
from the Land Forces Atlantic Area.
This six-month deployment will see Canadian Forces members
based in Dek‘emhare, Senafe, and possibly Tserona, in
Eritrea, where they will be integrated into the 2nd
Battalion, Royal Dutch Marines, also being deployed as part
of SHIRBRIG. Eight Canadian staff officers will also serve
with the SHIRBRIG staff that will form the UN mission
headquarters.
