This works.  I first encountered relaxation in Robert M Nideffer The Inner Athlete: Mind plus Muscle for Winning New York: T.Y. Crowell Co. 1976,  Chapter 7  Self-induced Relaxation Procedures.
 
I used this kind of method to get over some pretty debilitating insomnia when I was a teenager; went from being up for 4-5 days at a time to being able to get at least a couple of hours every night pretty consistently.
