Hello,

I'm looking for info on my Grandfather who served the Artillery "unit unknown so far" in WWI. Cpl Kenneth Wilfred McLean trained as an Artilleryman at ValCartier before his deployment with the EF. He was presented with a Military Medal for bravery while overseas. Grampy was a member of the Kensington legion on PEI. It's in one of their pubs that I read about his medal.

I'm interested in finding what unit he belonged to and some history on his unit and its role in the war. Any help would surely be appreciated. I'm hoping someone out there as an historian will have his name on a unit roll call. Or maybe there is a list of medals presented and to whom.

Thanks in advance

All bravery medal recipients are listed in the Canada Gazette. I suggest that the Canada Gazette might include the historical records (on microfiche) such as his unit and the citation. The Canada Gazette is made up of three parts, Part I is most often divided into six categories. The one you want is entitled: Government house which contains notices of orders, decorations, medals and mention in dispatches awarded to Canadians. Check your local   library.   For more info see:   http://canadagazette.gc.ca/history-e.html

The Gunners of Canada Vol 1 also found at your local library and bookstore includes detailed info and would likely describe the event, unit and award.   Col. G.W.L. Nicholson, C.D., The Gunners of Canada, Vol.1, 1534-1919, (Beauceville (Quebec),1967).

You may find info about his enrolment such as attestation documents which will have a unit written on top if you search CEF database @ http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010602_e.html   The Archivianet website seems to be malfunctioning this evening, good luck another time.

Another great site is by Michael Dorosh an avid member of Army.ca @ http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/

Regt No. 40223 Bdr McLean's attestation documents are in found in the database @ http://data4.collectionscanada.ca/netacgi/nph-brs?s1=mclean&s2=&s3=&Sect4=AND&l=20&Sect1=IMAGE&Sect2=THESOFF&Sect5=CEF6PEN&Sect6=HITOFF&d=CEF6&p=4&u=http://www.collectionscanada.ca/archivianet/02010602_e.html&r=69&f=G

Just copy and paste this into the address window.  Attestation papers are his enrolment documents.

The stamp only shows Artillery Brigade which is legible.  Match Artillery Brigade with info on Valcartier training from Gunners of Canada and you are on the right path.  Unfortunately, Bdr McLean's actions are not listed in the Gunner of Canada or Right of the Line, best bet is still the Canada Gazette.

You can apply for a copy of the file through Canadian Archives.

Thank you very much Gunner98. I'll sift through what you've so generously provided me and will let you know how I make out. Really, I can see you put a pile of effort into your reply to me, and I sure do appreciate it.  :salute:

Excuse me for the slow response; the site didn't let me know you'd replied to my post.
