Achtung!

US Navy to alter swastika-shaped barracks

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070926/ap_on_fe_st/swastika_barracks

Building # 46 at Goose Spit looks as if the designer was "inspired" by a swastika, that is to say, 46 looks like a swastika. Kind of.....

I am glad they are changing the design, the design is offensive and just plain unacceptable!

+1 to the US Navy!

(Note the above comment is loaded with sarcasm and 100% BS)

Toodles

It's a wonder no one has complained about the swastikas that are visible on a building in Ladysmith.....

I think I stayed in those Barracks.
Any 2PPCLI guys remember staying near or in those barracks (hard to tell exactly from my bad memory and a satellite photo ???) back in 97-98 after some time being "Enemy Force" in Fort Irwin?

just curious because these barracks have come up in conversation before and I couldn't remember if we stayed in them or not.

When are they going renovate all the Buddhist temples in the U.S.? Many contain the swastika, as it is a mark of Buddha.

I understand them taking the politically correct route, but I think it's just silly. I guess they need to stay safe from the tin-foil-hat armies coming in and accusing them of being Nazis. Oh well.

A Quick Edit: After looking at some pictures of the building, it seems like a really nice structure, lots of greenspace, lots of windows...

I can't believe people actually find time for this kind of trivial crap. That's a few hundred million down the drain that could be put to better use.  ::)

Actually it substantially predates Buddhism(2500BC) by thousands of years and can be found world wide across disparate cultures.  If you study the stars you'll kick yourself for missing it. Here is a kooky site with a pic of what I mean.

Thats right. If you draw the Big Dipper in its solstice and equinox positions and Polaris as the center you get  a Swastika. Polaris was the most important star for navigation in the ancient world. And the solstice/equinox were dates as important as life itself for early agricultural peoples.

I believe it is time for the Nazi use of this ancient symbol to become just a footnote in a history book.

The NAZI swastika is different from the Budhist cross....
there is nothing wrong with the budhist cross - which has been around for centuries.

I guess I should've phrased my post more carefully, and written "is a symbol associated with Buddhism". All I know is that the Buddhist temple near where my college was had swastikas on it if you looked carefully, as did alot of buddhist ornamentation. I asked my Buddhist friends about it, and they told me that it's a symbolic footstep of Buddha.

snake,
compare the Budhist cross with the NAZI cross = are the reverse = not the same

That little detail escaped me then  ;D

Still - A striking resemblance.

Swastika's can't be all that bad, there are fonts for Windows that uses them...

Alt+21328 卐
Alt+21325 卍

Mind you that you have to have the proper font from MS for them to appear properly...

Swastikas can be both right-facing or left-facing. In fact, even the version adopted by germans could be seen both left and right-facing until around 1920, when they decided to make it standart right facing (Land flags where printed in such a way that the swastika was always right-facing, when looking from both sides. On naval flags though, the swastika would be left or right-faced depending on wich side you were looking at the flag from).

A final note : before WW2, swastikas were widely used in the western world. If I remember well, there was even an American unit who had a swastika as a shoulderpatch and had to change it. It as also been the symbol of the Finnish Air Force until 1944 when it was changed (until WW2 the swastika was a popular good luck charm for pilots).

Douke

( Good luck charm? Didn't do the Germans much good.... did it?)
