I'm just curious as to what the typical schedule is for infantry officers as far as weekends go. Is a 6 day week common or are you usually relatively free on weekends? I don't mind putting in time on weekends, I'm just curious as to what to expect. I suppose time in on the weekends would increase in the lead up to training ex's and deployments but what about your generic, run-of-the-mill weekend?

Unless you:

1. are a reservist
2. work with the reserves
3. like giving yourself more work
4. on a Ex that is longer than mon-fri (that is rare these days, but suck it up)
5. deployed on a mission

your weekends are free.

Depends on your job. If you have a   position at platoon or company level, you are probably OK for most of your weekends while in garrison. Once you get into battalion HQ, especially in jobs like Adjutant or Operations Officer, you can expect to work early,   late or on weekends just to stay ahead. Once you move out of battalion to a Brigade or Area HQ, especially in a key job such as in the G3 shop, you can expect to come in on weekends when things are busy, especially if you are required to spend time away from your primary job by attending conferences, etc.

As Chags pointed out, if you are a Reservist or a Regular assigned to the Army Reserve, get used to working weekends as a regularly scheduled part of your life. Sometimes you may get only one weekend off in a month. The CTO day each week is programmed in to deal with that "shift schedule" for folks on full time service with the Res, but that day is not a guaranteed right and you can't always take it.

Cheers.

For CAP and Phase 3 you will have most of your weekends off.  For the first few weeks things can be somewhat crazy and you may need to be in on the the weekends to some extent.  Also on phase 3 the offensive ex runs 2 weeks with a 12-16hr pause in the middle so thats not much of a weekwnd.  Not sure about ph 4, I believe the weekends are off but the amount of homework does eat into them.
