The deep interest in the Vickers is due to it being the magnificient weapon that it was, yes it was heavy 92 lbs in total of gun and tripod but it occasionally jammed due to poor maintenance or ammunition and if probably looked after, by a welltrained crew, it could fire nonstop other than for barrelchanges for several days. It also had the range well over that of the Sustained Fire M.G.s today admittedly that range is not required now due to the effectiveness of the 81mm mortar.
For a gun of its calibre and age, it was truly a spectacular weapon. To be in service from 1912 to 1968, let alone the South Africans who still had them in 1988 at least!!, it must have been doing something right!!

P.S. Why do you use the American abbreviation?
