27 May 1872, the regiment is raised in Ottawa as The Ottawa Troop of Cavalry.

The Dragoon Guards

15 November 1878, Redesignated The Dragoon Guards.

The Princess Louise Dragoon Guards

It was redesignated on The Princess Louise Dragoon Guards on 3 Jan 1879.

5th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards

Redesignated the 5th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards on 1 February 1903.

Princess Louise Dragoon Guards

Redesignated the Princess Louise Dragoon Guards on 15 March 1920.

The IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards

Amalgamated with the 4th Hussars of Canada on 15 December 1936, they created The IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards.

4th (Reserve) Reconnaissance Battalion, (IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards)

They were Redesignated the 4th (Reserve) Reconnaissance Battalion, (IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards) on 1 April 1941.

4th (Reserve) Reconnaissance Battalion, (Princess Louise Dragoon Guards)

Redesignated the 4th (Reserve) Reconnaissance Battalion, (Princess Louise Dragoon Guards) on 8 June 1942.

4th Armoured Car Regiment, (IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards)

Redesignated the 4th Armoured Car Regiment, (IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards) on 19 June 1947.

IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards (4th Armoured Car Regiment)

On 4 February 1949, they were Redesignated to the IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards (4th Armoured Car Regiment).

IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards (RCAC)

The present designation, IV Princess Louise Dragoon Guards (RCAC), was authorized on 19 May 1958. In 1964, the regiment was reduced to nil strength and placed on the Supplementary Order of Battle.
