Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe was born in Iserlohn, Germany in October 1962 and joined the Canadian Forces in 1980. He attended Collège Militaire Royal de Saint-Jean from 1980 to 1985, graduating with a baccalaureate in business administration. After attending Canadian Forces Command and Staff College in 2001, he was posted to the Canadian Forces Joint Operations Group and assumed the responsibilities of the J3 Plans in the Canadian Forces Joint Headquarters in Kingston. Promoted to his current rank in January 2003 he completed his tour with the Canadian Forces Joint Headquarters, leading the operations planning branch as the J5. During his tour with the Joint Operations Group, Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe was deployed on NATO operations in Macedonia, to HQ JTFSWA in Tampa, Florida in 2002, and most recently to Kabul, Afghanistan as the Chief of Staff for the Canadian Forces Theatre Activation Team during the summer of 2003.

Lieutenant-Colonel Sharpe assumed command of 2 PPCLI on 20 June 2004.
