History of the 19th Alberta Dragoons (RCAC)

The 19th Alberta Dragoons (RCAC)

The regiment was raised in Edmonton on 1 February 1908 as The 19th Alberta Mounted Rifles. Three years later, on 3 January 1911, the regiment is Redesignated the 19th Alberta Dragoons. In 1936, the regiment amalgamated with The Alberta Mounted Rifles, and later, in 1946, amalgamated with the The Edmonton Fusiliers, to become the 19th Alberta Armoured Car Regiment (Edmonton Fusiliers). It was later Redesignated the 19th Alberta Armoured Car Regiment, then the 19th Alberta Dragoons (19th Armoured Car Regiment). The present designation was aurthorized on 19 May, 1958. In the reorganization of the 1960's, the regiment was reduced to nil strength and put on the Supplimentary Order of Battle.


The Alberta Mounted Rifles

The regiment was raised in Vagreville on 1 April 1908 as the 23rd Mounted Rifles. Two months later, on 1 June 1908, it was redesignated the 21st Alberta Hussars. On 15 March 1920 the regiment was Redesignated The Alberta Mounted Rifles. On 1 January 1936 the regiment is reorganized into two separate regiments; The Alberta Mounted Rifles and The South Alberta Horse. The regiment amalgamated with the 19th Alberta Dragoons on 16 February 1936.


The Edmonton Fusiliers

The regiment was organized on 15 May 1924, when The Edmonton Regiment was reorganized into two separate regiments. On 15 December 1936, 'A' Coy, 13th Machine Gun Battalion was amalgamated with The Edmonton Fusiliers and "(MG)" was added to the designation. The "(MG)" was dropped from the designation on 1 April 1941. The regiment amalgamated with the 19th Alberta Dragoons on 1 April 1946.


13th Machine Gun Battalion (C.M.G.C.)

The 13th Machine Gun Battalion was organized on 1 June 1919 and consisted of four companies. 'A' Coy amalgamated with the 19th Alberta Dragoons on 15 December 1936.

The South Alberta Light Horse

The South Alberta Light Horse still exist today in the Order of Battle.
