Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Saltwater environment attacks metal via a chemical, electrical and biological means. In fact the only reason that the large merchants ships can be economical is because of advances in modern paint technology.

Don't forget your sacrificial anodes.

I was reading through the new edition of Canadian Defence Review when I saw some interesting information. The image below is low quality but it seems Vard has shown off a "new" Vigilance concept. I initially thought it was a reused old rendering but they did add a maple leaf to the funnel alongside the pennant number of an MCDV follow on. As far as I can tell, this model is unique and largely changed from the previous proposals. What looks to me like a Bofors 40mm Mk4 is added forward alongside perhaps a 30mm gun mount adjacent to the mast? UAV deck and multi-mission deck has been changed around alongside the small boat arrangement. Grain of salt as per usual but potentially more relevant when taking into consideration the next point.

They have an article talking about a "new Canadian Multi-Mission Corvette (CMC) program" which apparently exists according to them and the CDR.

A new Canadian Multi-mission Corvette (CMC) Project has been created by the Department of Defence (DND) to replace the Royal Canadian Navy's (RCN's) existing 12 Kingston-class Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs) that are approaching 30 years of service. CDR asked Quebec-Bureau Chief, Peter Diekmeyer, to speak with Team Vigilance to get an update on their offering to the Canadian government and learn more about the Vigilance-class vessel. Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy continues to drive the revitalization of domestic naval supply chains. However, experts have long recognized emerging gaps. For example, the RCN's 12 Kingston-class MCDVs that need to be replaced — for which the Canadian Multi-mission Corvette (CMC) Project has been set-up. In recent months, this ambitious initiative — which opens a range of replacement options — has acquired renewed momentum.

Vard also has this apparent program listed on their current DND projects. I haven't heard of this program being announced even though it has been rumored for years at this point. Did Vard just leak the program officially or is this just their marketing?

I know there is a few people working on requirements but as far as I know no official project stood up as of yet. According to my boss a replacement is not funded or in the strategic plan as of yet. Perhaps its pending or wishful thinking by Vard. I would imagine a official request from builders to bid would come first.

Well if your not driving the requirements, your probably following the taillights of someone who is.

May be seeing their tailights but they are hotboxing their car and thinking happy thoughts, but they probably have some senior navy folk there with them. I think the GoC figures the AOPs will replace the MCDVs, even if they are completely different roles and capabilities (and cost way more to operate).

Yep lots of discussions if AOPS can replace the KIN Class on OP REASSURANCE. I was expecting with the last defence update an announcement that some of the class would start to be paid off as there has been talk of that although ships are still be funded for refits with MCT going into a one year refit soon and KIN coming off dock very soon.

Politically and strategically it would make sense to refit them and lay them up. It would make more sense to send them perhaps to the Great lakes and store them there. Come a real conflict, the navy would have to expand rapidly and conduct continuous route surveys on both coasts and possibly overseas. The West is short of vessels that can do that.

The refits can be done by the smaller yards and possibly some of them could be stored on dry land as they are not that big. Hold onto them for a period while you design a replacement, then sell them to friendly navies of developing countries. I look at ships the size of the Kingstons as similar to the Senator APC's. Have a slowly continuous build with some in service, some in layup and the oldest being disposed of after a set number of years.

We won't storing ships in the Great Lakes, on land and ships won't be refitted and put away as they immediately start to deteriorate without regular maintenance. Its better for the ship to sail and that's what will happen with MCT. We currently have three ships on the WC tied up and PM going on but no crew although as I understand it that will end sooner than later. Ships are not APC's, not like them at all and they won't be sold to another nation.

And only 6 vs 12 - Canada - Doing less with less -

Companies an countries mothball ships, for years. If done correctly you can minimize the refit. We are just shit at storing stuff. There is very little on the Kingstons that would have to be stripped out for a sale. I can think of several navies that would be happy to have them.

There is actually an offer from a Pacific Rim country to buy them.

Sale of ships is interesting, at one point there was a serious proposal to sell Huron to some Shiek to turn into a superyacht. It got turned off because it turned out some critcal systems were still officially ITAR (even if it was 1980s technology).

Yes I heard Vietnam.

I'm not saying it can't be done, what I'm saying it won't be done. When was the last time we sold ships to another country?

We sold some of the gate vessels to owners in foreign countries. (including the USA). We also sold one of the old mine sweepers (Bay class) to the Duke.

It's been done before. Just saying.

Some of the old auxiliaries got sold off, but we're officially never going with a reef society again after having to take a few back and then disposing of them properly and also spend millions more on others to support artificial reefs.

With the changing environmental regs usually by the time we're used them up there is something like PCBs or asbestos that needs cleaned up first.

Quite aware of that and that's a bit of a stretch comparing essentially a trawler and the USA to a foreign military in ASIA and the ships would have to get there. Of course if they want to put them on a heavy lift ship which is not cheap. Given that giving away ships to other entities such as Fraser, Cormorant has backfired on us normally has just caused us just to scrap them adhering to strick environmental protocols for disposal. Of course its entirely possible that the ships are eventually bound for the Vietnam navy although no decisions have been made officially on the disposition of the class and as mentioned before we currently have ships going into refit and the tied up WC ships are apparently being reactivated. As someone who has a fair amount of experience with the class and its condition while I trust us to maintain them and address significant issues that have only recently come to light, I would not push them on to other users just saying.
