Well, when other countries refused to take the people they didn’t want they turned to other measures. They probably would have done that anyways, at some point, though.

In other news, major cuts to federal weather service personnel, and things like accurate predictions of extreme events may be more difficult. Impossible to say it was what lead to them missing the flood in Texas that wiped out a kids summer camp, but in broad strokes you can't argue that less forecasters/scientists etc won't impact things overall.

Similar to cuts to ATC (after decades of underfundign) leading to more crashes, don't get this deathcult. I guess it's fine until it happens to you, and sad to see the backlash against science and rational logic in the CDC as well.

Are any and all critiques of the regime's policies now considered a "hit piece"?

Are the entire 4th estate and those elements of the 5th estate that question the actions, intent, or motivation of the regime now considered to be unpatriotic and unamerican if they question or challenge the regime in any way decision?

They didn’t miss it. NWS had severe rain and flash flood watches and warnings out in a timely manner starting a couple days ahead, and increasing in severity as the meteorology developed. People died to denial. Unfortunately it looks like the worst sudden deadly flooding happened in the wee hours of the morning, so people who didn’t heed warnings before going to bed were caught by what happened, and so were those in their care.

That's good to know, thanks for the correction.

Interesting that they call it locally 'flash flood alley' but decided not to put in any kind of flood warning system because of the cost. That seems like the kind of local thing that should be funded by higher levels of government as a preventative measure.

I spent some time in that neck of the woods hill country many years ago, though not specifically in Kerrville. I've rafted the Guadalupe River when it had been at height, and had an exciting night when a storm blew through the area while we were under canvas at Camp Bullis (the ex, MUSIO - Medical Unit Staff In Operations, based on how the medical system would work in Korea, was part of the officers advanced course). Whether there had been a warning, can't say, at least there hadn't been anything in the CP log before I headed off to my cot. My first indication was when I was awakened by rain on my face and the GP Large flapping overhead held to the ground only by the guylines at the other end of the tent. A couple of the other tents were swept away and some had to be relocated because they were flooded out, but we sorted it out and continued ex play. A couple of days later, after endex, there were still some roads/streets on the short journey back to Fort Sam Houston that were closed due to flooding.

While looking to see if there were any online photos of 1990 flooding to illustrate my personal tale, I came across this.

Flooding is so common in that area that 1990 was considered insignificant (I don't recall any reports of related deaths). Just a few years earlier a youth camp tragedy similar to this year's event occurred.

Those bloody fools. Collection, analysis, and dissemination of timely intelligence helps put cops in the right physical or investigative space to prevent something before the bad day happens. Most policing is local; cutting the part of DHS mandated to share intelligence with other levels of government and other jurisdictions is exactly the wrong thing to do.

I know I shouldn’t expect better at this point, but that was so easy to not fuck up.

It’s an unsophisticated response that weakens your argument (although you didn’t really have one to begin with).

Generally used by those partisan people who “don’t want to talk about it” and have nothing to contribute when hit by a cogent argument to which they have no response.

Interesting article in the Globe and Mail this morning.


I remember an area in Texas flooded out during a hurricane a few years ago (I can't remember where) and it was reported that the municipality/county had no land use rules about where you could build, and the entire neighbourhood was in a known flood plain.
