If this helps, I cleared all the steps on March 2nd and never heard back about being placed on the competition list so I had to follow up. Got a reply April 19th saying I had been placed on the merit list but I don't know exactly when that happened.... could've been March 9th like it could've...
I didn't mean to downplay the severity of a fire.
I've only experienced icing conditions so I guess my post was a little bias.
Both situations are extremely dangerous
Severe icing is {imo} worse than a fire on-board because it's all exterior and hard to reach (de-icing boots will obviously help quite a bit but they're not perfect)
You can lose 30% lift and drag can increase by 40% in the worst of conditions.. that is scary af
Remaining calm and focused on the situation as opposed to the possible consequences are extremely important in airborne emergency situations
I'm a civilian pilot atm and we are taught the 4to1 rule... think for 4 seconds, then act for 1 second and repeat
Saves dozens of pilots
