Guess it depends on the employer. Some might, if you request Leave, and Leave is denied, but you decided to take Leave anyway, my employer would consider you AWOL. Not to suggest that is fair or unfair. YMMV

Not to suggest growing up in one generation was better / easier, or worse, than another. Just different. Eg: analog vs digital. Young men of the digital age may be more vulnerable to being sucked into 24/7 cable news and internet political memes, podcasts and forums etc.
