I think 3 yrs is a minimum, and that you can stay after that.
CAR used a similar approach, i.e. drawing ppl from the 3 reg infantry regiments. It had its own regimental structure complete with capbadge and colors and, once you were done, you just went back to your parent unit and rebadged.
