Divining the right role, capabilities, structure, and Regimental System for Canada's Army Reserves

Touche. There are definitely options.  If we were to go that route, some of the admin functions currently centralized at CBG level would have to be shuffled up or down.  For example, in 41 CBG very few of the units have independent finance capabilities, so the G8 cell does most of that work. ...

Divining the right role, capabilities, structure, and Regimental System for Canada's Army Reserves

Apologies for the delay.  Its been an extremely busy week.  Yep, there are definitely training deltas, and no one is saying that the reserve component should be part of the "fight tonight" force or Roto 0 scenarios.  Given 6-12 months of warning, a great many of those gaps can be closed.  In...

One in five students lose money by going to university, IFS finds

I also thought it was interesting that the article stated that the study made no attempt to compare hours worked when comparing lifetime earnings.  It stands to reason that some people will want to work more, and consequently earn more, while others will want a more balanced lifestyle.  I...

Divining the right role, capabilities, structure, and Regimental System for Canada's Army Reserves

Admittedly that is a hard thing to quantify, but they did attempt to do precisely that in the FY 13/14 Departmental Plans and Priorities report. The have not done so in subsequent years, so perhaps it is hard to do.  The link is now dead, but I've included below my original post in this thread...

Divining the right role, capabilities, structure, and Regimental System for Canada's Army Reserves

The Primary Reserve budget is a rounding error in the overall defence budget at around 1 billion dollars.  That includes all of the Reserve salary, the salary of RSS, equipment, our slice of individual training and institutional support, base infrastructure...everything. The department turns...

Milnet Decision Game 1: The Defence

Mine is attached below.  When I have some time I will add some comments on my thought process.

Milnet Decision Game 1: The Defence

Infanteer – thanks again for putting this together.  I thoroughly enjoyed the exercise. I don’t consider any of the responses below to be at all conclusive, but I am hopeful that some discussion can be generated.  You are a brigade commander in the Baltics or Korea.  How have things changed...

Divining the right role, capabilities, structure, and Regimental System for Canada's Army Reserves

These mission tasks above are just the "new" ones.  As part of this process, the expected outputs of the Army Reserve for "basic" Infantry, Arty, Armored Recce, et al. are being codified as well as part of the same mission task framework.

Ordered "to get a phone" / Contact Information [Merged]

A few things: -I never said that it was lawful or a good idea to order a CAF member (RegF or PRes) to purchase a mobile phone, but it is a slippery slope.  Would it be acceptable for a CAF member to have no off-duty contact info at all (e.g. no mobile or home phone, and no fixed address because...

Ordered "to get a phone" / Contact Information [Merged]

Well, not quite nada, but we definitely lack the "stick" of the CSD in those circumstances.  We have a hard time getting soldiers out for certain types of tasks, but for the most part we can get them on the phone. This is completely compatible with a part time terms of service model...guys with...

Ordered "to get a phone" / Contact Information [Merged]

I think we are in violent agreement on most points here.  No where did I say that the expectation would be the same for everyone.  It is going to vary based on a variety of factors to include the operational task of the unit, the level of readiness it is currently in, and the position the member...

Ordered "to get a phone" / Contact Information [Merged]

The context is whether that remaining one member was making a reasonable effort to be reachable.  Don't want to buy a cell phone? Fine. Are you answering your landline?  Do you have voicemail? If so, are you checking it a reasonable number of times per day (recognizing that what is reasonable...

Ordered "to get a phone" / Contact Information [Merged]

I would say no, but it is 2018.  To my kids, a phone is a black piece of glass, not a handset connected to a coil of wire on the wall in the kitchen 8).  A member should make reasonable efforts to be reachable.  An order of "you need to buy a cell phone" is likely inappropriate, and perhaps...
