Pope Francis- Medical Issues/Death April 20/ 2025

Going to Rome over Easter with my son on a Father/Son trip. Looks like there could be a new Pope by then.
Provided the conclave has finished. Have I got that right? Not a Catholic btw. Fascinated with the RC church though

I assume so, I'm a Prod but had a RC mom and Anglican father and married an RC as well. Going for the overall site seeing adventure, just worked out the timing was best over Easter as he would be finished with exams and prior to starting his summer job.

I had the opportunity to attend Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter's Square, even though I was raised Baptist(about as far from RC as possible while still mainstream Christian), it was an experience I will remember for the rest of my days. I'm sure Rome during Easter is just as special.

Just learning that His Holiness, Pope Francis, died a short while ago.
Just yesterday he did a tour of the Vatican, driven among throngs of Catholics on Easter Sunday.

This image is used by the Holy See to indicate that the chair is empty. "Sede vacante " in Latin

May he rest in peace.

The Pope has died, age 88.

One of his last official acts was a brief meeting with Vice President Vance.

Well, the chattering classes will read all sorts of stuff into that.

Looks like he opted for a simple funeral. Wood coffin, buried in a location outside the Basilica.

The man certainly practiced what he preached…
Not a close follower of such things but it is my understanding that things like a plain coffin, etc. are tradition. Something about the role being the descendent of a simple fisherman.

Not for popes. Apparently they get buried in triple caskets of various more expensive things. A pine box is far from what they get buried in. This is a departure but likely far closer to the life that a Jesuit would be expected to live.

Having been to St Peter’s Basilica and seen the various tombs, simple fishermen is not how I would describe how these men were buried.
