Houthi Red Sea Blockade

I've seen that snippet before.

I believe this was speed trials, so there wouldn't be much on board for an airwing.

We don't take the Air Dept to sea, generally, unless we intend to to fly them. Ships often sail less an Air Dept.
I assumed that.

Do aircraft carriers go to sea (operationally) without their air wing? Kinda defeats the point doesn't it?

The Royal Navy has two aircraft carriers that basically do that mostly because they didn’t buy enough aircraft.

Anyone want to lay bets on how long the Houthis will lay off attacking shipping?

To be fair to them, bagging 11+ Reapers and two Super-Hornets is pretty good for a overinflated terrorist group.

Are they having an issue?
Mostly crappy luck for numbers 2 and 3 I think, probably exacerbated by a high ops tempo. The first one, the Gettysburg shoot down, I struggle to believe wasn’t rooted in incompetence somewhere, or a system that badly broke.

I think the world has spent too long in peace, and forgotten that carrier ops are extremely high risk at the best of times.

Same goes for helo ops off frigates and destroyers. If the choice is between maybe losing the helo, and definitely losing the ship, the CO will risk losing the helo.

It could also be due to lack of experience. Assuming that the report is true and that the carrier was making aggressive manoeuvers due to missile threats, when was the last time a US carrier had to do that? US carriers have gotten into used to being far away from any legitimate missile threat. Relying upon a layer of defenses that extends out almost 200nm, they likely dont often train or even think very often about needing to conduct ASMD manoeuvres. However, being in the relatively narrow waters of the red Sea and gulf of Aden, it's now happening and either the crew or the USN in general doesn't have the experience or tactical procedures worked out to avoid this situation.
