Fun fact, the capital city of Pakistan was built from 1960 under Ayub Khan. It is the City of Islam. Islamabad.

The history of Pakistan is one of a South Asian elite trying to exploit a diverse population by appealing to religion that most of said elites don't sincerely follow. It's also what they use to try and separate themselves from the culturally similar North India.

Take away religion and there's no raison d'être for Pakistan or even Bangladesh. Revert back to what was British India. Incidentally, this is also a Chinese nightmare. The minute South Asia becomes like the EU, is the minute every Indian defence rupee is aimed at China. I wish people understood the motivations behind the Pakistan-China nexus.

Close. But in Saudi they are all the same ethnicity. And there's a complex in interplay between religion and nationalism.

In Pakistan, they aren't Arab. They are South Asians whose culture was Persianized by the Mughals. This is why Pakistan's Urdu and India's Hindi are mutually intelligible while Urdu uses the Arabic script.

This influence means that like Iran there's always a risk that eventually people may just reject religious oppression. In countries like Iran and Pakistan where their religion isn't tied to their ethnicity, it's not a stretch to portray Islam as a foreign religion that was imposed on them. We're seeing an element of this in Iran. We'll never see this in any of the Gulf States though.

They hit oil rigs in UAE waters. Sounds to me like somebody is realizing they don't want their oil infrastructure struck back. I really hope the UAE takes back their disputed islands.

Westphalia is in Europe.
I have a Phillips school atlas of mine that my parents bought for me in 1963 when I was 7.

A lot of countries, Saudi among them, had indeterminate borders.
Some disappeared when you left the coast and vanished into desert sands, mountains and jungles.

The Bedu, the wanderers, not only didn't recognize borders, there were no borders to recognize.

In vast parts of the world law did not exist outside of city walls. And cities still had walls in 1963.

A Serbian boss of my age that grew up in Yugoslavia, managing the conflicts of Atheist Socialists, Atheist Communists, Roman Christians, Greek Orthodox Christians, Russian Orthodox Christians and Muslimn, both Sunni and Sufi, of multiple ethnicities that had been dominated by the Turks,....

Does the U.S. navy want to sail its large surface combatants right into the gulf on predictable escorts? Could put them in harms’s way more than desired. And even at that insurers or carriers may just nope out.

The strait will become safe when the conflict ends or when Iran’s ability to launch missiles or drones is completely neutralized. Not before then.

But effective closure of the strait for several weeks is probably priced into U.S. planning.
