    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Even if they were identical to the british type 26... has anybody seen one afloat? Strictly speaking (IMHO) it is not an off-the-shelf vessel since none has been yet commissioned nor launched. EDITED: That is the other side of betting for the newest design on the race. The best part is that...

Save Money and Get a Big Ship

Thanks BAZ for your insightful and instructive replies. I can only agree with most of you have said. You have shown me there is a gap for one or two HA/DR ships, as to develop the skills, including shore connectors (lcu, lcm) needed when infrastructures are broken. And that gap should be...

Save Money and Get a Big Ship

Following your words ... considering our GDP and position on the G7... we are not the ones with higher GDP nor the ones with more population. Nor should we have big problem to defend sovereignty on our territory, just in the Arctic. Being the case we don't have so many resources, both in terms...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

I would like to point to the numbers and types of combatants foreseen in other, similar, navies. I refer to UK, France, Italy and to some extent to Australia. All of them are working as to have a fleet of about 12 (Aus) to 19 (UK) combatants, not just patrol boats, ready by about 2030s. All...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Considering factors such as difficulty for manning and budget, IMHO Canada should soon procure 4 ocean and arctic capable submarines. With soon I mean to be operative by mid 2020s (around 2025). Then... on a longer term, with about 5 years delay or as much as the Victoria class can be...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

Not sure that this is the proper thread, but found this interesting article... https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/navy-blues#

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Now compare that to the fact that V. de Quebec is nowadays deployed in eastern med. along with De Ruyter ( zeven provincien class) and C. Colon (F-100). How much risk and delay is the MOD ready or willing to take?

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Well... having different radar and CMS, the Hunter class and the British type 26 start to be not so similar. For the moment Brit. T-26 will mount (AFAIK) only 24 (3x8) mk41 cells plus 48 (12 cells x4) CAMM missiles which might not work properly with AEGIS: studies are being carried out for...

Ok ... SSNs (not SSNKs) ... I meant the Astute class, of course. EDITED: Nice document to learn from.  :)

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Well... I actually should have said german-norwegian Type 212cd ... but maybe the swedish-dutch (while not running on fuell cells) could get a similar submerged endurance.  Thanks anyway for the correction.  :)

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Well, we all know this is not going to happen... for some years ahead. However within 4-5 years, longer endurance fuel cell AIP submarines will be ready, either the german-dutch one (with methanol) or the spanish one (with bio-ethanol), may be even the improvement on Li-ion batteries will be...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

I would like to point now to the "collateral" sides of the future award. Lets consider that Australia has managed to get support for the disputes on the South China Sea, ... I mean, got from France the commitment to deploy vessels for the Freedom of navigation operations at the time of the...

    New Canadian Shipbuilding Strategy

Very reasonable & sensible reply. I worked once in a nuclear plant at the time of refueling, the condenser had to be reworked (where pure water cools the radioactive steam circuit). There were hundreds of welds and of course a few of them came out wrong. The matter is to ensure by different...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Could we open a poll to vote: 1. which team do you think will win  the CSC bid: Alion / BAE / Navantia-Saab (Dutch / Brits / Sp-Aussies) ? 2. Similarly ... which is YOUR preferred option? Maybe it has already been done but I have not realized since I am new here.

Save Money and Get a Big Ship

First of all thanks to EyeInTheSky , FSTO and others for your understanding. Regarding "balloons" or  Zeppelins I think that, apart from winds and weather, they may be good for static surveillance near the borders, however flying them above a naval unit or task group would be like a "show off"...

Save Money and Get a Big Ship

Sorry if I have bothered anyone, was not at all in my mind. I see Cyclones as a very useful MH including ASW roles , but looking into other navies ... * UK operates both Merlin (similar to Cyclone) and AW 159 Wildcat * Italy & Germany use 2 helos in their ASW Fremms / F-123 & F-124 frigates...

Save Money and Get a Big Ship

Actually ... she can embark up to 30 NH-90 helicopters  8) OK ... I did not think much on spare parts and so, but I would prefer 2 medium helos (same type) in an ASW frigate than only one Cyclone. Could leave Cyclones on other frigates for other purposes as AEW/ASaC. I did not know about RQ-20...

Save Money and Get a Big Ship

You are right, I know. Having a 2nd helo is more a wish than anything else. But I consider than the 2nd helo for ASW would be almost a MUST for any navy: provides more time a day for searching submarines, higher reliability (if one breaks down, still you have the 2nd while repairing the 1st)...

Save Money and Get a Big Ship

While the Canberra is a great ship, I do not believe Canada should enter into that costly vessel: 1.- Should some hundreds of soldiers be deployed by sea somewhere out from CAN, the best option would be along with our US allies: they could embark on their San Antonio, America or Wasp class LHDs...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

There is a new review on latest ASW frigate design F-110 from Navantia. It seems a design ready to start production ... whenever funds are available. Apart from a very good suite of radars, sonar, ESM and sensors, the design is about 6.700 tons, CODLOG propulsion, up to two Helos, AEGIS and...
