    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Semantics.  The radar budget is different from the RHIB budget but it all comes from the vote 5 allocation for AOPS. I’m talking about NSPS staff, project office, selection of yards, legal fees, etc.  Check the budget estimates and try and find a line item that covers the cost of running the...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Fixed at Crown expense. I'm not playing one shipyard against another - merely pointing out that playing dirty politics with ship building is par for the course for all the major yards.  WMG can count the number of MPs in BC from the government side of the house just as well as we can - hence...

Cutting the CF/DND HQ bloat - Excess CF Sr Leadership, Public Servants and Contractors

Taking this idea one step further - A Modest Proposal for the CF if you will - why not cap military ranks at Col/CWO (pay level 8A only) and have all units larger than fleet/brigade report directly to civilian executives?  Think of the savings and efficiency gains if we eliminated all HQs!

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

No - cut due to cost.  The propulsion plant is proposed to be diesel-electric twin shafts with bolt on propellers, similar to existing CCG icebreakers.  The current plan is for 6 AOPS maximum but that is still too expensive for the $ allocated which was in 2007 dollars.  Delays due to...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

While they were on-time, the Orcas were a mess when delivered.  Corrosion and dissimilar metals issues IIRC.  Be that as it may, building cadet and navigation training boats to a proven design with no combat systems is a far cry from building complex warships and integrating combat systems from...

    Promotions in the CAF [Merged]

When I went through MARS training, OCTP (the old program that CEOTP replaced) candidates were promoted A/SLt upon successful completion of MARS III and SLt upon successful completion of MARS IV.  DEO were promoted to A/SLt upon successful completion of BOTC (BMOC) and promoted to SLt upon...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Interesting opening shot in the PR campaign.  What Jonathan Whitworth, CEO of Vancouver-based Washington Marine Group, fails to mention is that they were awarded the $1.5 billion submarine maintenance contract - beating out Irving - and they had the Orca Patrol Craft construction contract as...

Cutting the CF/DND HQ bloat - Excess CF Sr Leadership, Public Servants and Contractors

That's not how I read it - I thought it was release that was being decided on a case by case basis not promotion.  The table on pg 5 shows that there are no GFO older than 57 so it apparently doesn't happen often. I thought it was interesting that "it has been shown that the majority of the GFO...

Cutting the CF/DND HQ bloat - Excess CF Sr Leadership, Public Servants and Contractors

Make that 140+ Cdr/LCol and LCdr/Maj  (and RCMP/civilian equivalents) on the Joint Command and Staff Programme.  There are also 40ish Capt(N)/Col (and civilian equivalents) on the 10 month National Security Programme.  If you consider the traditional rank pyramid to still be worth retaining -...

'It's time to consolidate NDHQ' & 'DND to take-over Nortel Campus' (Merged threads)

Not everybody will be moving to Nortel, should it happen.  The Ottawa Citizen notes that the department will continue to operate National Defence headquarters in downtown Ottawa.  Construction on LSTL II has been ongoing for the last 2 months - 2200 new folks are coming to LSTL II with a move in...

    PERs : All issues questions...2003-2019

First off, it's Ombudsman not Ombusman.  Your opinion piece is filled with spelling mistakes and typos - it really makes it hard to take the message seriously.  Secondly, what are you expecting the VA Ombudsman to do about the CF PER system???

    Governor General and the uniform

FWIW - the CD is now unwearable without court mounting.  The last few that I presented had notches cut out with scissors to mount it in the box.

    Remembrance Day resources

The Directorate of External Relations and Public Relations in Ottawa maintains an intranet website that has a section titled "The Speaker's Corner".  This is an online resource for CF members and DND employees who are planning to speak about what they do.  It has various ready-made PowerPoint...

"If you're not signed in, you're not covered" - Class A injury compensation

I don't believe this is new.  Email is no different than any other communications medium.  Posting messages etc are issued via email and email is saved in RDIMS as a corporate record.  I've had to print out my emails on several occasions for ATI requests as well.
