    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

I agree with that. Nevertheless I think some of us are mixing ideas by trying to be pragmatic and rational. If the replacement could be one-to-one, assuming that AOPS are an addition of capabilities, maybe the best option would be to have a mix of a few (6 to 8) small, lightly armed, updated...

    Replacing the Subs

For those who (like myself) would like RCN had SSNs... there is a series of three articles (up to now) by Peter Briggs in the Australian ASPI . The last one provides interesting assessment on the training requirements and planning for their future nukes...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Do you think that other countries, such as UK, France or Italy do have spare resources to invest in corvettes or general purpose frigates? Or might it be that, precisely due to the scarcity of resources, have opted instead for a more economical, mixed fleet of AAW/ASW/GP frigates? Note: call...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Depending on what we want them to do... a) for patrolling in Africa, gulf of Aden or anti-piracy ... something between the AOPS and the CSC. Either the Type 31 or the next EPC (south-European Patrol Corvette). Crew about 100...

    Replacing the Subs

I also see joining KSS 3, Walrus replacement or Type 212CD as the best options. Any other alternative would be a customized design/ orphan class. I would not discard a mixed submarine fleet in the future: six SSKs and three SSNs of those to be built for Australia. SSKs to be delivered in the...

    Replacing the Subs

Type 218SG, at 2000 tonnes surfaced, is closer to Type 212 (1500 tonnes) than to Type 216 (projected to be 4000 tonnes). Type 216 is just a kind of "preliminary design", double the size of whatever boat TKMS has built before. This would actually be a customized design. Just think of how the...

    Replacing the Subs

Thanks for the input. Certainly if brute power is needed, AIP does not provide it. Might batteries be used instead? they could provide peak currents for some time, especially since, once emerged, diesel gens would recharge them. I agree with the ability to surface in case of emergency as a...

    Replacing the Subs

I feel great today, my enthusiasm is bulletproof, don't worry at all. 🍻 But, naiveness apart, there are few options left: Discard Japan: their boats are designed for a life-span of 15-20 years, ... not for the RCN discard South Korea and Italy (sure?) since their designs are tributary...

    Replacing the Subs

I may be wrong but also believe that safety is the main reason to surface, followed by need for communications (send data collected, receive orders), by the amazing view of the plain frozen sea (in peace time) and by chance to capture some snaps of polar bears 😁 A customized design. Well...

    Replacing the Subs

Not being an expert, from the technical point of view I see two issues for that: First, breaking through Arctic ice should be a problem of buoyancy and reinforced hull. Probably not a big tech. problem for oceanic submarines of about 4,000 tonnes and above. Secondly, patrolling the Arctic for...

    Replacing the Subs

Well, i don't think 4-6 boats would be ideal, and probably i'm not alone on this. IIRC there was a parliament recommendation for twelve, which i admit may be too much in terms of costs (purchasing and operating) and manning. would be nice to have at least 10: three per ocean and one under...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

A notional Arctic amphibious ship to deploy some 200-300 troops should probably 'recover' [ from the Blue Ridge class ] those cantilever (protruding) davits in order to accommodate not only 3-4 landing craft (LCVPs?) but some SOLAS compliant lifeboats as well, ... I guess.

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Excuse my curiosity regarding fuel constrains in the north: Ethanol's freezing point is much lower than marine fuel's, probably would not require heating to keep it liquid, and water diluted in it should not affect performance of a fuel cell. Ottawa University is making some progress in direct...

    Replacing the Subs

Since JT showed no interest in joining this SSN procurement, there might be still an option to join (at some level) the program and strengthen Canadian nuclear industry, despite not purchasing any boat in the beginning. Somehow alike the F35 program. It would be interesting to gain access to...

    Replacing the Subs

If we take a read to ASPI... " The officials said such a technology transfer was unlikely to happen again. ‘This technology is extremely sensitive. This is, frankly, an exception to our policy in many respects. I do not anticipate that this will be undertaken in other circumstances going...

    Replacing the Subs

That may be fine as for the RCN sub capability. However i feel i didn't adressed my point. I referred to the "building subs capability" itself, since IMO it's a different capability to building surface vessels. Let's take (grossly) ten years to deliver the first boat. Then one more every two...

    Replacing the Subs

There's a factor to consider: number of boats to build. The capability for locally building the subs may be worth for 12 boats, but... what may be the minimum number of boats to make it worth? Note that the capability is going to cost tens of billions to Australia.
