The RCAF fleet doesn’t routinely “patrol” our coastal waters. There are assets that do that, surface patrols (SURPATs) daily; PAL contracted, TC NASP come to mind.
As Dimsum mentioned, space assets can do part of the job. AIS and other tools are big enablers that negate the need for low and...
Back in the day, we had 31 Argus we replaced with 18 Aurora (and later on, 3 Arcturus…Aurora without the ASW kit). I’m sure the reason was “the Aurora is more capable”.
This is the GoC/CAF way and we cut ourselves off at the knees when we constantly do it,
IMO.
It’s not common for an aircraft to go from one coast to the other unless it’s transmitting to an op/ex, doing the torp range or just tail swapping for maint reasons.
Quick from the hip, I’d go with 4 serviceable (not scheduled for 2nd or 3rd line Maint) at each Operational Sqn, 3 for Force...
Under this setup, the Wing Ops O effectively is the shot caller; s/he delegates day to day C2 down to a Major in the WOps staff.
There is a LRP planning flight at Wing Ops; there are folks that look at “next 24 hours”, short term and long term forecasting for exercises, op deployments, etc...
Yes; how many hours Wing and Sqn Ops and planners spend tail-chasing is mind-boggling.
It certainly doesn’t have a significant effect on OT&E / FD when your Sqn by default is Pri 3 on a good day and serviceability is “what you’d expect from 40 year old airframes”. 👌🏻
I’d love to see 407 have a “building with windows”. Imagine - windows in offices. Fresh air…craziness.
They also were the hold-overs for Block 3 and 4; maybe the CAG / Comd will go crazy and put them thru P-8 CT first? (Not holding my breathe on that one…)
Ref infrastructure; I’d take a wild guess that studies might have taken place…
🤷🏻♂️
I’d love to see something similar to the P-8 facility the RAF built in Lossie…but with a few more bays of course.

The entire base infrastructure has been sold off and in use. not to mention the runways and their condition. ZX houses all 3 of the FG, FE and FD Sqns and associated simulator spaces, weapons storage areas etc.
407 won’t have that many tails. The majority of the fleet is and will be based out of ZX.
If historical trends follow, the Demons will be the last Sqn to convert.
No but I’m not confident the 2014 P-8 was as mission capable as Block 3 (from talking to peer USN operators).
I’ve been on ops where Block 3 outperformed USN P-8 ( sub-surface mission stuff ). Overall, though, the P-8 is a more modern, reliable aircraft. We can put all the high tech systems...
The total upgrade would have started with ASLEP (needed), and AIMP Block 1 followed by 2-4. Block 2 was basic and needed (Nav and comms, no sensor stuff). Block 2 left the Aurora with 70s era tactical systems.
Block 3 was money well spent; we upgraded pretty much the entire IMS and...
Not many people see inside the Aurora as she is today. The video I posted of the USN P-8 shows how modern it is; here's a few pics of Block 4 Aurora to compare...gives some visual sense of just how old the SGOD really is. My first time on a P-8 was around 2015, with VP-8 in Lossie. Getting...
