US Army divesting 8% of Blackhawk Fleet

Wasn't quite sure what thread to post this to, but Sikorsky performed ground runs on the new T901 engines on a Blackhawk. I think Canada could do well selecting this platform to replace the Griffons, especially with new engines and electronics...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Interestingly, the VARD Vigilance website has updated the specs of that design (Flight 2 version) to include Mk70. The design can supposedly accommodate 4 x 40ft containers. So it looks like they have some visibility into what the RCN wants. I still don't think there is any way that ship will...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Sure, but a manned vessel, with Bridge, Operations room, crew accommodations (including associated spaces such as head, messes, gyms), hangar, etc...., even at 105 m, will not have a lot of space for 40 ft sea containers. Not saying it can't be done, but it will be an engineering challenge to do...

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Seems like a lot of capability for a 1000 ton ship. I agree with your assessment "likely a bit heavier", but when we start talking VLS and the required sensor suite, I think 2000+ is more realistic.

A little bit of explanation here on why AN/SLQ-32(V)6 was selected over the bespoke EW system MDA was going to design. https://www.jedonline.com/2024/10/22/canada-looks-to-us-navy-for-non-developmental-ew-for-csc/#prettyPhoto

    Trump administration 2024-2028

The government is on the hook to make up shortfalls, so I have no issue with them reaping the benefits of good management. I'm the employee rep on our DB plan (Crown Corp, so managed pretty much the same as PS and CAF), and I can attest that the calculations used to declare a surplus are...

    Replacing the Subs

Interesting article on Chinese adoption of nuclear "Battery" tech on their subs. https://cimsec.org/neither-fish-nor-fowl-chinas-development-of-a-nuclear-battery-aip-submarine/ As mentioned in the article, Canada researched this quite heavily in the 80s (AMPS/Slowpoke). Could this technology...

    Replacing the Subs

Seems to me VARD has a number of designs that could be fitted for task. Bonus being they are a Canadian design firm (mostly). https://vardmarine.com/vessels/ This one looks promising: VARD 9 610 - Vard Marine

    Replacing the Subs

I doubt it. There may be some kind of release stating the RFI is closed, but since no decision will have been made yet, I don't see any kind of big press release on March 1st. Even if there is a decision to sole source it will take some time to paper that up. Trying to predict what DND will do...

    Replacing the Subs

I don't think so. That date marks the closing of the RFI. The project office will presumably take all that data and come up with recommendations that will form the basis of the RFP, unless they come up with a recommendation to sole source. All this will take many months in any case. I don't know...

Good progress on SPY-7: https://www.navalnews.com/event-news/sna-2025/2025/01/live-tracking-test-demonstrates-spy-7-capability-and-scalability/ Looks like we chose well with this radar system.

    Maritime Coastal Defence Vessels (MCDVs)

Agree. I wasn't trying to suggest this exact vessel - just that it is possible to fit a lot of capability into a ship of this size.

The Italians have a nice little ship with a lot of capabilities in 2400 tons. https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2025/01/italys-future-ppx-opv-a-technical-overview/

Not sure how you would categorize the "slushbreakers". PC5+ perhaps (PC5 hull, PC4 bow).

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Not exactly related to this thread, but interesting to see the specifications of the new German navy Type 127 "frigate". Pretty formidable. The only weakness I can see in the relatively short range (4000 nm), but that's probably adequate for the German Navy's mission. Of particular interest is...

    Replacing the Subs

Germany has added to their Type 212CD order, bringing the order book for type to 12 (Germany 6, Norway 6). Of interesting in the article was the statement that Germany should have 5 active submarines at all times, which suggested a fleet size of 15 (using a 3:1 ratio). Either way, if Canada was...

The Great Gun Control Debate- 2.0

Ruger 10/22!! Jesus! WTF is the matter with these people. That steps well outside of the "assault style" ideological bans and into straight up confiscation of all firearms.
