U.S. Annexing Canada (split fm Liberal Minority thread)

As a coralary to my last... I'm not sure a lot of people realize why the US is in NATO. It certainly isn't to defend Europe; quite the opposite, it's to control them. There was a joke in NATO a long time ago that it was created "to keep Russia out and Germany in." The point was instead of...

U.S. Annexing Canada (split fm Liberal Minority thread)

I was wondering to myself ("self," I said, to myself) about how much of the United States desire for other countires in NATO to spend more on their militaries was driven by the size of the Arms Industry in th US. I looked at some available data and global arms trade is relatively small (but...

U.S. Annexing Canada (split fm Liberal Minority thread)

Looks like we need to bring back the Bi-National Planning Group. It was set up at Colorado Springs after 9/11 to help redefine the defence relationship between the US and Canada, producing two main reports. The largest outcome was BORAD gaining a Maritime Warning role. I was part of it for a...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

What’s really funny is when warships try to be electronically something else act like a warship. Nothing like an AIS “fishing boat” scurrying to and fro at 25 knots to get somebody that has any semblance of a tactical plot interested.

U.S. Annexing Canada (split fm Liberal Minority thread)

Umm… just because the US Constitution makes it legal under US Law, in no way makes it legal under International Law. Unless we agreed to it. I’m not sure the US would have any soft power left if they forced the annexation of anything. In any case, I’m pretty sure he’s doing what he does best...

I don't have visibility on that. However, assuming we do have the hours, the doesn't speak to the challenging environment of over the flight deck on NVGs. I wouldn't want the first time over the flight deck when regaining currency to be on NVGs. However, they may have changed the way NVG and...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Lighting it in IR would allow pilots with enough currency to launch and recover on NVGs, but you'd need to be careful with spatial awareness. I would suggest you should also have visible spectrum available for pilot's that don't have that level of NVG currency.

Putting them in line like that does have some serious deck cycle issues though, as we’ve talked about previously. Right off the bat you’re going to need some type of mule, and tee along the helo out of the trap to use a mule is going to limit the sea state you can do that in and ship’s...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Yeah, although the Wildcat is really more anti-surface. Also interesting the number of Merlin Mk-2s they were willing to sacrifice for the Merlin ASaC. Hmm, thinking out loud (ie not suggesting, just musing)… what would it look like if we adopted the Wildcat, Merlin Mk-2 (with ramp) and ASaC...

The UK. Probably. But the choice of mission system would matter. Looping back to the first question would seem to indicate using the Merlin Mk-2 Avionics, with the CH-149 airframe to get the ramp, and include the capability to use the ASaC fit. I don’t think two 60R/S would fit, so you would...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

To a profession, the introduction of the Sea King, Sea Hawk, Merlin, in various services, informs how the introduction of other fleets, be it the Cyclone or some nebulous replacement, will go. It explains what is happening with Cyclone, and says any replacement might not be as simple as some may...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

I don't have that answer, because I've retired... as well, it isn't as important as you seem to believe. The operational work arounds, including doing a better job of teaching the crew how the aircraft actually works, are in place. How many times were the Sea Kings grounded, especially in the...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Sorry for the thread hijack (again): The first Sea King lost was of HMCS Bonaventure 30 Hov 1967, in which both back end crew were unfortunately killed. 5 years after first aircraft arrival. I've been reading a lot about the period, and there are some good lessons learned from the Sea King for...

Have you read even the executive summary of the report? Flight Safety Investigation Report for Stalker 22 Accident - Canada.ca The software isn't being "fixed," it was doing exactly what it was supposed to do. The crew was asking for it to do something it wasn't expecting. The maneuver in...

I can happily discuss the weaknesses (and strengths) of the Cyclone, and fully acknowledge the current supportability and generation issues. However, the implication that the Cyclone is "killing crews" is not helpful. I was talking just today with somebody at the museum about the "bad old...

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

The original "Cyclone" requirment was before the AOps (finalized circa 1990) and was for 28 aircraft (plus 7 for attrition, removed prior to the 1993 election). This was to support 15 det equivalents in 11 dets (4 dets were to be 2 helo, 3 crew; the 2nd line tanker with 3 helos 1 crew was...

    CH-148 Cyclone Progress

I was never a det commander (useful idiot ashore and all that) but in my, albeit dated, experience, either crew commander could do that. If you happened to have one Pilot and one TACCO crew commander so much the better. There was a time when it was somewhat common that both crew commanders...

    CH-124 Sea King Historical Thread

Passive tracking anyone? That's a good chunk of the CH-124B (HELTAS, Helicopter Towed Array Support). I think my favourite seat was a HELTAS TACCO. I seem to spend more time doing research then I do coding, but it's getting there. The plan NavyShooter and I are working on for the Bonnie will...

Lean on the USN to do the IOT&E, Initial Cadre, and the introduction years. Once you get established, pick part of the problem and do proper trials, exercises, development, etc, etc, etc. When you come up with something better (because you will) ask the greater community (ie the USN and allies)...
