CForr,
Perhaps I should have expounded a bit more, the dividends I was referring to was SOPs working with a "light" Infantry Brigade. Most of our operations were air assault and the SAPPER Leader course spends a fair amount of time working with both Chinooks and BlackHawks. Since we don't...
T6,
I had a Sergeant in my Squadron who had the SAPPER Leader course. It proved big dividends when we were OPCON to 3d Bde (RAKKASANS) 101st AB Div (Air Assault) on Op APOLLO in 2002 in some godforsaken place called Kandahar, Afghanistan! ;-) I only hope that our Army can continue to fund...
I'll wade in here and say that based on my experience reserve engineers have just as much an opportunity to deploy as a reserve infantry soldier. You are more likely to be successful if you are a Spr (Pte) or Cpl than if you are a Sr NCO/WO or Officer. Reason being? There are a lot more...
Hides...hmmnnn....which was better...Scotty Dog Wood or Butterfly Wood?....as long as the beer was cold and the hot dogs warm - who cared right?
Does anyone remember moving into a Cbt Tm hide only to find that someone was there before us...namely a Black Bear momma and her cubs?! Yikes! ...
Griswald,
You sound like the type of person we need in the Canadian Military Engineers! I hope you joined to deploy as I think that is probably going to happen to you in the next couple of years with the projected growth in Cdn Army activity in Afghanistan.
One word of caution, please be...
E31,
I hope my alma-mater does me proud and gives you guys a good handover! I know everyone is probably excited to leave but knowing where all our engr kit (and we do have a lot of it) is = early success in the mission.
Have a good one E31 and keep E31A and E39 on the straight and narrow! ...
Sea-dog,
Had no idea that you were coming from a South African perspective. As this is a Army.Ca site, I assumed that you were a Canadian Naval type and just wanted to confirm our terminology.... I meant no malice.
BTW all Canadian Army and Navy Divers are and will remain a proud bunch. ...
We trained in our secondary role in 1 CER as well. This was a good thing as CO 3 PPCLI BG, upon arrival in Kandahar, Afghanistan on Op APOLLO did his combat estimate and discovered he was a Company short to fulfil the perimeter security task in Feb 02. So, in went 12 Fd Sqn (+) into the...
Sea-dog,
I think you may be mixing up "combat divers" with "clearance divers" ? Being ex-Navy and reading about your experience suggests that you may be referring to Clearance Divers.
Maybe it is our Canadian upbringing or just being humble, but we have never called our combat/clearance...
Yes, I remember those days well Leo 1. The drinking policy was certainly much less stringent back then. :-X
However, I think we did some excellent training - especially the live fire stuff attacking the Soviet Pl defensive posn!

I like that enthusiasm! Having just come from Edmonton it is my humble opinion that the Single Quarters are acceptable. They were built around 1998 and depending on what unit you find yourself in, have been looked after fairly well. Subject again to what unit your with, you may have to...
I believe that is the plan, select 043s will be given trg on the MPEV with the idea that the eqpt will be alongside Tps or grouped centrally at Sqn or higher, depending on the forecasted tasks.

Having been one of the Sapper Leaders on Op APOLLO in 2002 I can tell you that no Infantry soldiers carried out kit. What they did carry was engineer ammo, particularly on the operation on Tora Bora where ~ 2500 kg of explosives was brought in by Chinooks and the Sappers were too busy setting...
Ah, Germany stories....
Kat, who was it that put an AVLB through some German's living room in the late 80s? True or wive's tale? Apparently the route recce didn't take into account the Biber! ;)

Well, the jury is back in, although far from being a scientific poll, the response was overwhelmingly in favour of a "who cares" attitude.
Interesting, indeed. We'll see how the next guys does.
S6 out.
We had a shooting competition this summer at cannought, one of the matches was named after Pat Vamplew.
I belive it was the 600yrd match.
Interesting, as I believe Pat Vamplew is alive and well...so much for naming matches after those that have passed on.
