    Age Limits - Reserves

On the other end of the spectrum, why are you not allowed to work past 60?  How did they come up with this number?  The 60 year olds of today are much "younger" than the 60 years olds a generation or two ago.  Your ability to do the job should not be based solely on a number.  (I believe there...

Canadian Forces Aptitude Test (CFAT) [MERGED]

I swear I'm really horrible at math.  But I just looked at the questions and thought about them with common sense...what is this question asking?  what does it want to know?  how do I get there?  Ultimately, common sense prevails. I also found a little trick with another type of math...

Canadian Forces Aptitude Test (CFAT) [MERGED]

Don't freak out about the calculus part.  I didn't touch it since first year university.  I think the authors of the CFAT assume that not everyone took calculus.  So, that's one less thing to worry about.

Canadian Forces Aptitude Test (CFAT) [MERGED]

What got me was the time factor.  I was freaking out at the end and thought I failed because I didn't finish two of the three sections.  I think doing practice tests under time constraints is an excellent idea prior to writing CFAT. English - I don't think you can study this section.  It's...

Alleged Institutional Racism/solutions in CAF (merged)

i'll Good point.  The uplifting aspect to this point is once that stigma is shattered, its like breaking through a brick wall.  It might take the third generation (ie. grandson/daughter), but once he or she does, it could be a valid option for future generations because he or she has set a...

Alleged Institutional Racism/solutions in CAF (merged)

"What has stopped the nonwhite male groups from applying?" I disagree.  I can't name anything specific, but I think there could be very subtle things that could easily be missed.  They would be things specific to the minority culture, like internal barriers.  I think if the CF is interested in...

Alleged Institutional Racism/solutions in CAF (merged)

Um, lots.  Basically anything that is less education than university level.  Lets just say, education and professional status is the end all and be all in, *ahem*, uh, some cultures.  What you do for a living really matters - its all about face- not just for yourself, but also for your parents.

Alleged Institutional Racism/solutions in CAF (merged)

"How?"  A lot more research and dialogue with people from minority backgrounds.  Focus groups have their limitations, but it could be a start in understanding cultural values and nuances (thereby avoiding stereotypes), and asking participants how CF could be made more...

Not even a rejection email saying that you're not competitive enough?

    waiting time

I mustered up my courage and did make the phone call.  The response..."wait".  But I'm glad I made the phone call because it puts my mind somewhat at ease.  I will do as they told me and wait.  The last thing I want to do is screw up and become "the pest".

    waiting time

Will I get notification if I don't get in?  It's been one whoooole week now, and nothing.  What are they doing?  Do they need to send my file back to the recruiting centre? I'm too scared to pick up the phone and call.  I'd rather they contact me.  The wait is excruciating.

I could use some encouragement please

If you've already regretted your decision twenty years ago, imagine how you'd feel if you denied yourself the chance a second time round simply because people were projecting their own fears and biases on to you.  This issue of getting people's approval can enslave you from living a full life. ...

    waiting time

I tried to look for the answer in the search and the application process thread, but I couldn't find it.  How long does it take to hear whether you get in or not after the board selection date?  I've been waiting for three looooong days already.  Why can't they tell you the same day?

Some people get it; some people don't

I find your first statement so true.  I read the book "FOB Doc" by Captain Ray Wiss, a reservist  medical officer (with an infantry background), who went to Afghanistan.  I put the book down and thought, "Every Canadian has to read this book."  He did such a good job of providing context and...

Some people get it; some people don't

This is exactly the problem; you've nailed it.  To him and probably to most Canadians, they think military is only combat because that's whats on the news.  I told him that combat arms is only one set of occupations.  I have seen my own transformation over the last several months coming to this...
