The Optimal Battle Group vs. the Affiliated Battle Group

With the decision now being officially made for C sqn of the RCD's to be re-rolled to Tanks and being detached from 2 RCR the OBG seems to be dead for all intents and purposes.

The Toyota Horde. Potential Future Fact or Fairytale?

So I threw this thing up as a sort of thought experiment and the results have been somewhat illuminating.  Most people who have responded seem to think that for the most part this force would not in fact have a chance against western medium and heavy weight forces, with perhaps the small...

The Toyota Horde. Potential Future Fact or Fairytale?

I'm sorry, I have no idea what you're saying here.  Anyone know what he's saying? I would love to hear how that goes.

The Toyota Horde. Potential Future Fact or Fairytale?

I came across this short interesting article on the Small Wars Journal by William F. Owen which argues that our future most dangerous enemies will be forces that are competent in formation level combined arms maneuver but conducting it with low cost forces.  It can be found here...

    A webliography for an OPME

Thanks for all the help guys.  I had numerous communications with the course prof and he is absolutly set on websites that are "devoted" to the topic. I've told him that there is probably only one site, the CGSC and CAC websites, that are dedicated to combined arms tactics and assault. He...

    Infantry DP1 Training

Delta Dog is right but they do get exported from time to time.  Two winters ago I was the course officer for a reg force DP1 Infantry in Gagetown run out of LFAATC (it was originally going to be run by 2 RCR). It was mixed with candidates going to all three regiments upon completion.

    A webliography for an OPME

Once again thanks to everyone for the help! It's funny, the websites you mentioned were the exact ones I was gonna use! Seriously.  I was also going to use globalsecurity.org.  He turned them all down.  I think this is one of those things where it all depends on what prof you have...

    A webliography for an OPME

Thanks for the suggestions, however, I already tried the CGSC and it was denied by the prof! So I would have to expect that the Combined Arms Center would be denied as well. I really don't know what he is looking for.  I don't know of any website that is actually devoted to the subject of...

    A webliography for an OPME

I'm doing the Technology and Warfare OPME and as part of the course I must do a webliography.  This means I must choose three websites on "Combined Arms Assault and Tactics" and assess them.  Does anyone know of any good sites devoted to this subject? Thanks!

Retired Ghurka Takes on 40 Train Robbers

I would be very curious to see if a similar incident took place in Canada if there would a public outcry from the political correct yahoos over the 3 deaths and 8 woundings.

    Small Arms and Combat Marksmanship

The 2.5 shooters is used to attain an average at higher levels as I understand it.  So yes it doesn't make sense at sect level because you can't half train someone or train half a person, but at pl level it means the pl has 10 shooters/gunners/drivers/crew commanders. Then at coy level you'd...

    Small Arms and Combat Marksmanship

New article to fuel the debate here folks. http://www.army.forces.gc.ca/caj/documents/vol_13/iss_1/CAJ_vol13.1_full_e.pdf Some key points from the article: 1.  The author identifies what he sees as a gap in the sections capability to engage targets 500-600m. He also emphasises the need for...

The Next World War: The “Great Game” and the Threat of Nuclear War

I read all three articles.  Very interesting and I think its important reading in that it should remind people that the days of state rivalry are not over and that nations could find themselves combatting one another again one day in the future in large scale battles. Having said that, the...

Bayonet obsolete? Not yet, apparently -

Yeah... I thought it was sort of weird as well.  He wasn't in my chain of command so I'll leave it at that. I just thought it was a good example of the psychological effect of the bayonet, as daftandbarmy grasped. Yup, maybe he scared some kids, (probably not though). Part of me agrees with...

Bayonet obsolete? Not yet, apparently -

We had a young soldier in our company who after 7 months of patrolling had finally had enough of those "cute" Afghan children.  He began patrolling with his bayonet fixed and kids stopped coming near him!  The psychological power of the bayonet on display!

    Small Arms and Combat Marksmanship

From this I take it that you would advocate following the CFOSP? In my experience the operational units are skipping the PWT's 1 and 2 along with their subordinate applications and going directly to PWT 3 in order to tick the box.  I get the feeling that the general consensus is that the...

    Small Arms and Combat Marksmanship

A few more 'so what's', at least further questions, are to be taken from this discussion I believe. If the rifle is not decisive in battle until within 100m then how should we be equipping and organizing our sects and platoons in order to take into consideration this fact? We could consider...

    Small Arms and Combat Marksmanship

Seems like a fairly narrow set of circumstances to justify beginning an entire program that costs millions of dollars. Adding a C6 to the section would reduce the time required for it to get into action to nothing. 4.5 years in the army and I hadn't heard that the C9/Minimi was terribly...

    Small Arms and Combat Marksmanship

This debate raises some questions about the Squad Designated Marksman program.  At the end of the tour each Coy had to conduct a post operational report (POR) on equipment, tactics, and everything you can imagine. Upon completing it we sat down together with the officer in charge of compiling...

    Small Arms and Combat Marksmanship

With regards to the 84 mm my platoon carried it on all clearance ops that we conducted. We carried 5 rounds.  3x HEDP and 2x airburst. I never had the chance to fire the airburst ammo in combat but I was assured by the pl I RiP'd with that it quickly will cause the enemy to break contact when...
