Former Finance Minister Jim Flaherty RIP 10 April 2014

Apparently Mr Flaherty suffered a massive heart attack. What a tragedy for his family, friends and colleagues. This is especially poignant coming only one month after stepping down as Finance Minister. Thank you for your service to Canada. RIP.

US Navy develops way to turn SEAWATER into FUEL (liquid hydrocarbon fuel)

Wow!  Very promising technology. This reminds me of the movie "The Water Engine" which threatened the primacy of the automobile-petrochemical industry duopoly. We shall see if this technology is sufficiently scalable and efficient to permit the USN to curtail dependence on POL resupply.

The simple solution is to stop playing, thus conserving bandwidth for the rest of us on these fora.

Women in U.S. infantry (USMC, Rangers, etc. - merged)

The FORCE test has one standard that is not gender specific ie women must pass the same tests as men within the same available time. For example, the first test is to lift a 20 kg sandbag above a line on the wall, 30 reps in 3.5 minutes.  This can be very difficult for a 45 kg person, should be...

    The "Letter"

To Green, then I will disregard what you post after that sentence, since your "advice" has no basis in experience or expertise. To ZeiGezunt, the letter will inform you why you are not medically fit for enrolment.  Hopefully it will arrive soon.

VAC Claim help please. PTSD+Compartment Syndrome+Cubital tunnel syndrome=3b

A cubit was an ancient Egyptian method of measurement, based on the length of the forearm from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger.  In this case, the cubital tunnel is where the ulnar nerve runs over the elbow, and is analogous to the median nerve and the carpal tunnel at the wrist.

CAF international bases, staging areas, and fighting formations

Given that the Europeans and the US lack the will to make even the smallest useful gesture to deter Russian expansion, there is no way that Canada is going to "bolster" them with "in situ" forces.  Never mind a war weary and financially fragile US against the backdrop of global financial...

Wanted: 1000 x new rucksacks for (at least some of) CF

I believe that RMC and Emirates Airlines have cornered the global supply of pillbox hats. If the RCMP want some, they'll need a contact through PWGSC with the usual appropriate regional benefits.  ;D

Amount of travel (deployment, postings) related to different fields

Number one choice is likely pilot of the 4 engined fixed wing variety. After that, other RCAF or RCN trades rather than CA.

Amount of travel (deployment, postings) related to different fields

I concur.  If "travel" is what you seek, then consider Air Canada, Westjet, Princess Cruise Lines, etc. otherwise, you're likely to visit such scenic destinations as Bosnia, Afghanistan, Haiti, Honduras, various middle eastern or African countries which are either in conflict or post-disaster. ...

Must haves for tour of duty (new to forces)

+1 for the Petzl Tactikka headlamp recommendation. Baby Wipes. You might consider a small battery-powered electric razor, which beats both shaving with cold water or singing your eyebrows when the immersion heater flares up (although I realize you're interested in "warm climate" ops).

Patrick Stewart and the Effects of His Father's Wartime Service on his Family

I thought that this documentary was an excellent illustration on how the experience of war can change not only the soldier, but also send negative ripples through their family that last a lifetime. It's clear that Patrick Stewart's relationship with his father was less than ideal.

    Ottawa sinkhole forms

    What is a Veteran?

The RCL definition of "veteran" is anyone who has served and has completed basic training ie BMQ.  This means that those still serving are veterans, those who released after Basic are vets, etc.
