    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

Well, we do that already. That's what the deck crew do. What you are describing is the same way we handle helos on the AOR. We jokingly call them deck monkey vice air boson. We use those "lashings" you describe on all ship types. Whenever the helo is not about to take off we lash them to the deck.

Oldgateboatdriver, as you can see I'm as passionate about the job we do at sea as any other sailor. I'm very excited about these new boats. I just believe we should be careful not to assign too much credit to their potential capabilities until we finalize their design. The hardest thing older...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

I didn't miss your post. I just didn't have the actual data on size comparisons. I don't have a copy of SHOP (Shipboard Helo Operations Procedures} to reference. Obviously you have never towed a helo... three helos on the tossing deck of an AOR. Maybe if you craned them into place but not with...

Yet it isn't as large as the tanker's FD and that was as small as you could safely go and still do a swap. In the end there's no real need for more than one helo... even though they are the most important part of the ship.

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

I know it's nice to have a helo up 24/7 but it's not doable with the crew hour rules unless you're willing to carry 4 crews per helo. I get that the only reason a frigate or destroyer exist at all is to carry the helo... ;D but you can't fly them all the time.

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

It was tricky enough to do on the tanker with a mule. On anything narrower it's not doable. Don't forget the Cyclone is wider than the Seaking. Having worked the flight deck for 15 years I have a pretty good idea what can and can't be done on the back end. You are not swapping two helos on that...

The det chief and I go way back. I just assumed it was RimPac.

    Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship AOPS

Absolutely valid point. If someone were to ever fire that shot though the CCG just needs to back off and shadow. The RCAF with MPA can take over until a CPF can meet them at the other side of the passage.

I regret I'm too long in the tooth to be able to sail on these boats. As it is now one of my good friends has taken the very last seaking det to sea... RimPac.

If the mission bay is tall enough that could work for a ferry trip.   The Flight deck is too small you can't switch the helos around so you'll be stuck flying only one of the birds. However the advantage would be if someone else fouled your flight deck you could free the deck to recover your...

    Canadian River Class Destroyer Megathread

The model is clearly for a single Helo. As the stacks bracket the Hgr there's no way to fit 2 Helos in there... unless they are tiny (eg. Cobra). With the stacks on either side of the Hgr, it'll get super hot in there. The 280s stack went right thru the middle of the double hgr and it could...

That was my take as well. You guys are asking for too much, but here's a magazine to make everything better.

    Salute! Magazine

Well buddy, you may like it but to me it's a waste of time and money. The VAC site is a far more effective tool if they want to toot their own horn. I will note that for those Vets that don't want a computer of dislike the internet there is value in this publication.

If we had the Griffons built to MilSpec that would be a great plan. As they are now, the frames are getting stressed.

AOR Replacement & the Joint Support Ship (Merged Threads)

Agreed. It would also be easier to sell the idea to the public compared to an LHD or other honking ship. Doorman would have been very handy on the Somalia, East Timor and Haiti missions. However our faithful old AORs did us proud.

    Salute! Magazine

So I got this cute magazine in the mail yesterday. I have no idea why. A quick look and it appears to be nothing more than VAC bragging about doing their job. Maybe I'm being overly cynical but couldn't that manpower be put to better use?!

    VAC wait times

Well, it appears that despite the minister's claims of improving the system the wait times for Disability Pensions has now slipped to 15 months! Latest communication from VAC stated, "At this time, the oldest applications currently being reviewed are from February, 2017." I doubt there is an...

    Apaches

I agree that may be the easiest COA to sell to the politicians and public, but the Bell412 has a critical flaw. She's too slow. The Chinhooks had to slow down so the "escorts" could keep up in Afghanistan. It may be easier to have any used AH we purchase refurbished and upgraded in Canada thus...

    VAC wait times

I had an interesting conversation with one of the VAC phone monitors (for lack of a better description). I cracked a joke that there was a misprint in the service delivery standards and that it should be 16 months vice 16 weeks. He then launched into a tirade on how they had warned the gov't...
