    6 June 1944

I don't think there needs to be a huge event of every well...event annualy. It would, however, be nice if people would atleast recognize them on their own. Less than half of Canada knows what happened on the 6th of June 1944. I doubt a third knows VE day was the 8th of May. On a side note, I...

Last year was the 60th...61 isn't such a milestone therefore the public and press are uninterested. As long as they get involved every 5 or 10 years they can still feel good about themselves without having the hassle of having to go through it every year. Besides Joe-average Canadian already...

    Basic Training-what do you think?

It will depend on the individual. I don't have a problem being PTed, yelled at, staying awake, or doing long drill lessons. Lots of people do. Other people found the classroom stuff to be easy. I found it slow, boring and utterly repetative. Why not wait and see what you can cruise through...

My Canadian military funding research essay

He does need a thesis. In Highschool essays, however, you are generally not supposed to use the "this essay will argue" route; unless that is that things have changed in the few years since I graduated. I use similar segways into a thesis statement on some term-papers for my current degree, but...

    6 June 1944

Hmmm, I came here intending to make a D-day anniversary thread, but I was beaten to it. I guess these things happen when you get to work at 0830... It's 0930 now which is when the Casino Pillbox on Sword fell to French soldiers and a sherman tank. Anyhow, here's to remembering the courage and...

    Progress in the Army

I agree. He does, however, need to re-evaluate his article, not so much in content but in direction. First off, why fault the troops for something they have no control over? Second, he should evaluate just why the situation was like that, and at the end of the day when you peel it back to the...

    does size matter

Being obnoxiously competative and stubborn is helpful too, I find. It's easy to find that little extra bit of energy if it means beating buddy on the PT test, or not letting one of those "stronger" !@#!s leave you behind. On course it's porbably a good idea to be quietly competaive, though.

    What is a Merc?

I don't see how. "a mercenary as a combatant who's highest loyalty is to money, and a soldier as a combatant who's highest loyalty is to country?" in no way excludes the possibility of mercenary types, as defined, existing in national armies.

    What is a Merc?

I would argue then that the 'soldier' who places his loyalties to money is in fact a mercenary, and not a very bright one, as there are far better ways to make money. Rhodesia (late 1979)  is an interesting and complicated subject, but for the sake of arguement I will see if I can get around...

    What is a Merc?

I suppose it would be too simple to define a mercenary as a combatant who's highest loyalty is to money, and a soldier as a combatant who's highest loyalty is to country?

    Physical question?

RE: being first, and 'excelling': **This is from experience on reserve recruit course so it might be different for you.** There is nothing wrong with pushing yourself during PT. Remember, you are a team. Stay with the pack help eachother out. If you are chronically at the front of the pack you...

    Physical question?

"Don't be first, don't be last, and never volunteer" is what I was told before I went to basic. The only part of that I paid attention to was "don't be last". This lead to all sorts of extra fun, but if you like a challenge...

TRAVELLING TO UK (SCOTLAND AND ENGLAND)

Either way Stirling castle is a really cool detour if your in that neck of the woods. I had the pleasure of visiting there when I was young(er?). Now that I am older and in an affiliated regiment, I wish I could go back and actualy take the time to poke around instead of running around the...

Saving the shins/lower back on ruck marches

In Civilian life I do a fair bit of backpacking, and have never had a problem with shin splints or a sore back, even with heavier loads in the ruck. That's what good kit will do for you. With the army kit, I can't say the same thing. On the bright side however, after the first five or so...
