"Public Safety Canada’s Emergency Management May Suck"

This will come as no surprise to anyone involved with emergency management in Canada. Anybody who is expecting a FEMA-like response from the Canadian government (and not to say FEMA doesn't have their challenges) is in for a rude shock.

CAF Reserves - Prince Rupert, BC

I'm familiar with Prince Rupert and frankly, there is no CF reserve unit anywhere within a reasonable commute. However, there is a unit of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue in Prince Rupert, and if you are looking for some real action, you might try them. Best of luck to you.

    Applying for OAP for Spouse

Answering my own question, according to Services Canada time spent with the CF outside Canada is not considered "living outside Canada" for the purposes of OAS. And the nice lady on the phone thanked me for my service.

    Applying for OAP for Spouse

I did a search but wasn't able to find anything about this. I'm in the process of applying for OAP for my spouse. On the application there is a section for time spent living outside Canada. My wife accompanied me on our 3-year tour in Lahr in the early 80s. On the application it states that...

Return of NDI 75: Veteran Service Card [Merged]

I used the CF One card yesterday at a local printer to get my veteran's discount. It was the first one they had seen but once I showed them the "veteran" annotation, there was no problem getting the discount. I'm still keeping my old NDI 75 though. Sometimes you just need an "additional"...

    Three Humvees Totaled During Airdrop

I remember dropping some of our Lynx one year in Pet (or maybe it was a LAPES, foggy memory). One of our Lynx had a particularly hard landing regardless and spent most of the following year being repaired. I was never quite convinced of the "airborne armoured recce" concept, although jumping was...

What book are you reading now?

I'm just about done reading "The Origins of Totalitarianism" by Hannah Arendt. Very academic and a tough slog. But interesting, particularly since it was written shortly after the end of WW2. I was motivated to see if I could draw any parallels between what she writes about and the current...

Electric vehicles in BC now allowed to use HOV lanes-with only 1 occupant/driver

"Vehicles that rely on gas-electric hybrid motors and do not plug into an external source are not eligible to receive the HOV pass decal", says a government statement.

Military Mascots (Real and Anthropomorphised) - a split thread

During my one naval adventure, I sailed from Pearl Harbor to Esquimalt after a RIMPAC. I think there was a competition to see which ship would sail the most economically on the way back. Got me, I'm a soldier . . . Anyways, ALGONQUIN, which I was hitching a ride on, won, and the XO had the...

Roman Sword found in Nova Scotia questions history of Americas

Oak Island has been a topic of family discussion since I was a child (early '60s at least). My Dad is from Nova Scotia and it was a topic of discussion in his family even before that. To say it is a lasting mystery is an understatement. I visited Oak Island in the mid-'70s and if nothing else...

    Wild Animals

We did a Northern Viking (?) sovereignty exercise in Arviat in 1988, and since the C7s were not considered adequate defense against a polar bear each of our patrols had Rangers with .303s. Good thing we never considered going to war against the polar bears . . .

    CH47 Chinook

Not wanting to violate any OPSEC issues at all, but I'm wondering how the use and integration of the Chinooks is coming. Is 450 Sqn still doing acceptance and training or are the Chinooks being used by the brigades? Are they being used for troop movement or logistics? I'm just thinking back to...

November 2015: Paris Bataclan attack/hostage taking

Watching our Prime Minister respond to the events in Paris last night I was struck that I was seeing more Maggie than Pierre. I appreciate he was responding with scant information and correctly was not making policy decisions based on initial reports, but even so he seemed unable to keep a...

    Individual Meal Pack (IMP) [Merged]

I wonder if the jambalaya is as good ( :P) as the stuff we used to get in the cans (RP4s?) They did explode nicely though when tossed in the fire.

    Canada's New Defence Minister

I think Mr. (LCol) Sajjan has clearly shown his commitment to his adopted country, more so than many who were born here. I have only met him once in passing but mutual acquaintances speak very highly of him. I wish him the best of luck in his new portfolio.

    Election 2015

I did my duty as well. 5 minutes from entering the hall till done. I made a point of thanking all the folks working there. I'm not sure if they are paid or volunteers but it was well run and slick (of course it helped I was the only one voting at the time  :salute:
