    Army Reserve Restructuring

UK reserve officer training generally lags ours. IMHO, a full-sized, equipped, mobilizable reserve unit (which ought to be the goal) cannot be commanded by a reserve officer. The mission aspects are simply too complex these days to be taught and practiced on a part-time basis (same for RSM) It...

    Army Reserve Restructuring

It varies greatly by country and the roles and missions assigned to them. I've used the US and the UK as models. Both have units that have establishments as high as their regular force counterparts. That facilitates the internal promotion/development cycle because the pool of low and middle...

    Future Armour

IMHO, the aim should be to build a heavy fleet based on CV90-type vehicle (and by fleet, I mean several heavy/armoured brigades in one division) for NATO. We can also retain the current fleet of LAVs in two or three separate medium brigades which are tasked for roles other than Latvia. 🍻

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

Just as an aside, when I draw up my napkin future force models which are designed to show how to create an army that is capable of expanding to in size beyond its three plus one brigade structures using both its RegF and ARes, I always end up short of sigs and logistics/maintenance people/units...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

I just picked up a copy. It's only $4.99 on Kindle. Like I said. It doesn't take much to convince me we need a paramilitary force to deal with these issues. I'm ambivalent as to whether its police element (like Carabinieri or Gendarmerie) or a new wing of the CAF reserve force. I think the...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

Back in the dark ages when Canada's army stilled believed in tracked vehicles, I was part of a tour of the US Army's Special Forces training facilities at Fort Bragg (the Confederate general Bragg, not the WW2 Private Bragg :giggle: ). Anyway . . . as part of the tour we had a slide show...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

When I see the acronyms like "DOTMLPF" it reminds me of Ian Hope's article in the 2001-2 in The Army Doctrine and Training Bulletin which puts forward the proposition that "doctrine" is a comprehensive concept that includes cognitive, procedural, organizational, material, and moral components...

Indirect Fires Modernization Project - C3/M777 Replacement

You have no idea how mad that requirement in the RFI makes me. It's like DLR2's offices are located in Southern France. You know. I bet that it could be. There are more than enough factories with facilities for assembly. Cutting steel is also within ur expertise. Barrels . . . it doesn't matter...

    Future Armour

"Chimera" was an apt name for that project. I never quite understood it. The 105mm and early 120mm of the day was quite adequate against Russian armour in that terrain and the ATGM had pretty much supplanted the requirement for the 'gun in hull' Sturmgeschütz/Jagdpanzer anti-armour concept...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

During the 1970 October Fest, my troop had the task of guarding one VIP and four hydro towers crossing the St Lawrence River. It took all 30 of us and, IMHO, we were undermanned. There are many more than merely "several choke points." Risk assessment and priorities are always a challenge, but...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

I think that's a society problem. The CAF has always been a reflection of what raw human capital the Canadian public gives it. I'll disagree a bit for a moment. I don't have the personal experience in this but I've done hundreds of interviews of Afghan veterans and, quite frankly, the...

    Future Armour

I think that's basically the nub behind the MBT v "light" wheeled or tracked tank debate. If you want a versatile AFV that serve equally well in all roles in both defensive and offensive tactics, then you need an MBT. OTOH, if you are looking at what is essentially a tank destroyer to be...

Canada moves to 2% GDP end of FY25/26 - PMMC

As an old soldier, I'm the first to admit that soldiers today are generally better than "when I was 'originally' in uniform." They are better trained and equipped as individuals than my generation. The same is not true for the CAF as a corporate entity. Ignoring the fact that there were a lot...

Canada seeks to buy Long Range Precision Rockets (probably US MLRS or HIMARS)

I'm not sure if your picturing some coastal missile battery here that makes its own decisions when to fire. In my mind these are systems deployed in secure bunker positions eating noodles and reading porn magazines until an ISR system run by whichever JTF is in charge of the region acquires a...

Canada seeks to buy Long Range Precision Rockets (probably US MLRS or HIMARS)

That may be how it works today, in peacetime, with the capabilities that we have. I think it would be shortsighted to think that remote sensors in the future would not be able to give the same confidence of information and weapon guidance that an RQ-9B or even a P-8 would give. Airborne...

Canada seeks to buy Long Range Precision Rockets (probably US MLRS or HIMARS)

In two words - persistent overlap. It provides one more A2/AD system that will be there when neither aircraft nor ships are available or within range. That's a technique and it might work in some situations but I certainly wouldn't use it routinely. It's the HIMARS equivalent of the old...
